View Full Version : Tb42 economy. What do others get? Dual fuel vs petty

Hey guys when I bought the dual fuel was sceptical about any real benefit when you try to tune it to be able to use both. Was wondering what others with dual fuel get tuning it to be more bias to the gas and what blokes get out of straight fuel rigs. I currently get 300km on the gas 90L and mid 400 out of 100L petrol and the fuel is really only good for highway driving as floods a bit at lower revs.

Other than the savings using the gas for daily driving I've really got a gutless tank that only gets 300 km to a tank. Was wondering whether their really that bad on fuel when it's tuned for it.

hey mate, these things aren't known for being frugal on fuel................. I don't have duel fuel , only running petrol on a TB42E (EFI), and from an 80ltr tank I get anywhere between 350 to 450 Ks from it, depending on what I'm doing and how I'm doing it, I do also have a blowing exhaust manifold and I've only just cleaned the maf sensor and it needs a bit of a tune up......... so I currently work on an average of 20l/100kms.

Sounds like your usage is about average really......or maybe slightly higher

I've got a TB45E in my GQ SWB Auto and average 20/100kms with LPG on the open road.
Petrol injection is just used for cold starts only then swaps to LPG (Peel system).

You need to get Bobs opinion on this , but from my take on Gas powered 4x4 I would think 300 out of a 90 tank is way too rich.
I would think the norm would be 350k- pushing 400k, Make sure your electrics are faultless, Gas likes it a little advanced so Slight pinging on petrol
would be the norm, Source these "Y" pieces instead of :T; pieces it gives a better flow rate and less chance of cavitating at the "T".
Make sure all airlocks [bubbles]are out of the system;
Spray your Maf sensor as well

TB42e, 210,000km, long range (147L tank) straight petrol getting 20-24L per 100km depending on how I drive it but bloody scary in low range at 30+ per hundred. Power and economy is generally better on straight petrol but mine is not a daily so cost isn't a consideration.

Edit: I have a lot of stuff on mine. Winch bar, winch (steel cable), dual batteries, side steps and scrub bars, Kamar rear bar with carriers, fridge, drawer system (and all the stuff in it) etc, etc. So it takes a fair bit of right foot to get it moving.

my old TB42 was Carby / and Gas
I had mine tuned for performance - 99Kw on Petty 96Kw on the Gas, so mine ran on Gas unless I was towing & had hills
used to get on Ave 300kms out of 90l tank for gas, and 200kms out of 80l petty tank

BUT

it used to cruise at 140Km when needed for "overtaking" trucks on the hwy

I had the Sprint Gas injector on top of the carby - elec ignition, extractors etc also helped

cheers

I've got a TB45E duel fuel and was getting about 26-27L/100km on gas and 24-25L/100km on petrol. I have a lot of accessories such as a bull bar and a rear bar. By adding a Hiclone and high energy spark plugs, I've reduced the consumption by 1-2L per hundred. Still drinks like a fish but it runs a bit better. It is what it is I guess - a big, thirsty rig with a reliable, gutsy motor. Works great off-road so who's complaining?

I heard that those hiclones are a great match with those electric superchargers

Do you mount them near the flux capacitor?

TB42 and economy are mutually exclusive.

mmm i guess it's a relief to hear that my terrible economy is merely "normal"..!! i get about 350-370km out of a 90L tank of LPG on my carby 88 maverick. am having a few problems with it at the moment though, might have to take it to a gas mechanic for a tune up.

this is my first 4wd, is economy like this par for the course?? would i get much better on something else of similar vintage like a petrol 80 series?? how much better would a turbo-diesel be??

Petrol 80.. Same.

If you want efficiency you have 2 choices. Buy a prius or a diesel.

To be fair, the 14-15L per 100km many TD42 owners get is hardly state of the art fuel economy and not that much better than my TB42e on the highway at 18-20L/100......especially if you factor in the higher cost of diesel.

Last trip pulling our Van 1300 Kg's we got 456 K's out of 105 Litres of LPG (23.026 Litres per 100K's ).
Usually obtain 18/19 Litres per 100K's without Van
16 Litres per 100K's on Petrol
This is a 4.5L

I just tuned after fuel injecting & turbo charging a mates TB42 carb GQ with 33's.
removed the Gas setup but kept the 120l gas tank for long range trips and trickle pump to the main 85L tank.
He drives about 1100km's to QLD and then back to NSW every few weeks.

His last trip took back a 1200KG trailer load, when he got there he said the fuel economy was just a fraction over running his NA unloaded.
NA was averaging 23L/100. We can't tell you exactly as I'm trying to source him a new odometer/speedo assembly. (If anyone has a spare working one it would be muchly appreciated).
