So yer wasn't a good trip had to drive 200km home (she made it the big girl) pulling up what felt like every 10 - 30 mins to close off or open the return fuel line a little bit to keep the fuel up its guts and play with the timing then plug fouled up driving for what felt like forever over the range doing about 40kph max if that pinging its tits off hoping for a good long down hill to try clear the plug so the question is what's next I priced a Duramax conversation and $44,000 it can stay where it is but it would be nice any info on other places that do it would be great or just build a fully forged tb42 and boost the shit out of it have everything ready to go for turbo was going to turbo this motor over the next week or so (a real bloody pain in the ads) I've always been keen to get a 4.8 so dose the 4.8l motor fit in a gq I heard somewhere along the great vine there too tall but body blocks will fix that

Cheers

Very unlucky mate. Not often you hear of this happening..
But Rebuild and turbo buddy.. You've got the motor. A rebuild will mean a fresh motor and you know it's been done.
Then snail and boost it..
Heavy duty clutch, maybe pull the gear box apart and check it out also.

Not at all mate it was caused by a range of problems (I know this now..better late then never I spose) well this is what we have put in down to The throttle cable had some slack in it therefore not opening all the way and it was tuned to this (I only adjusted it before I left) once I adjusted it it started pinging really bad so we a adjusted the timing and with a few little tweaks we got going good after a hour or so it started pinging again so we played with the timing still doing it so I thought fuel pressure blocked the by line didn't work so we slightly closed the return line and that worked for a bit until the fuel pump started to shit it self then we decided to bypass one of the fuel pumps so after pulling apart and re running half of my fuel system we headed of again we great for a bout 5 mins then came the smoke oh the smoke and oil spitting out of the exhaust port ( still about 120kms from home) that's when we knew the damage was already done so then I had the shits held it flat the hole way home were possible and when I backed off it was shooting flames that where lighting up the road so I dare say it's melted the rings and if there's not hole in the piston I'll stand f*#king because she wasn't real heathy by the time I got home lol

The way I look at it is grab a 4.8 and not know the history, could be fine could be flogged.
Or put the same money into a rebuild and have a brand new motor.
The 4.8 is a good motor. I don't think there as strong as the 4.2's And a shoit load more electronics On the 4.8's.
You'll Have to do a loom splice and that ain't easy, or cheap if you palm it off.
If you have a carby, I'd go efi, rebuild and turbo.. And 18psi boost..
Do it right and you could be pushing figures of 300+

just get an xr6 turbo motor and drop into it if its too pricey to do the tb.

A few comp trucks I know had a blower on the 4.5 then the 4.8. Enamelled and de burred the block was getting 335 RWKw.
Could easily spin all 4 on the freeway, and scare the heck out of hoons, huge blower though.

Engineering and road worth tests also.

You'd need to do that anyway with a turbo upgrade.

Didn't think you did need to engineer as they came out stock turbo'd?
A v8 conversion needs the whole lot.

TB42 never came turbo'd from factory mate, as far as I'm aware. Would love to be proven wrong though.

Yep, good call.. That didn't click.
But it should be pretty straight forward doing a turbo compared to a ls2 due to the fact that,
-The gq did come out turbo, all be it the diesel, and
-You won't need to chop and move mounts etc and fiddle with the chassis.

Either way, probably find an engineer first and talk to them. They'll soon say yay or nay.
Take a lot of info on previous conversions done.
Can guarantee that the first thing you'll need is twin pot front brakes if you don't already..

Yea just the diesel.
