Hi, I hope someone can help me. I have a 1996 patrol 4.2 petrol long wheelbase auto. I had a lot of rust on the frame and I put it in to a garage to weld the frame and to renew the fuel line. This was over a year ago, But since I got her back the car has loss of power. It seems that the power is nor getting through to the wheels as the engine revs up to four and half as usual but the patrol does not transfer the power to the wheels. The garage has had her back many times and has cleaned the carb, replace the HTC cables.

Can anyone help me with what might be wrong. I have owned her since new and it is the best vehicle I have ever owned and do not want to scrap her,

Have you checked the transmission fluid level?

Thanks for your replies.

I have checked
vacuum hoses , fuel filters, transmission fluid level and used a carby cleaner. The engine sounds much better but the problem is still there.

It is intermittent and some of the time everything seems okay. I have noticed that I get a loud clonk noise from somewhere under the Patrol when it has the issue. The sound does not seem to be coming from the engine but underneath? It will clonk a few times and I have to back of the power, other wise the revs can clime to 3.5 and no power gets through to the wheels.

Sounds like the auto to me if you are getting a clunk and then power.

Hopefully someone who knows autos can explain better.

Sounds like a transmission issue. Have you checked the state of the trans fluid lately (did it look dirty on the dip stick?)? Or has it been serviced recently?
Does the gear shifter feel ok?

has been serviced lately and transmission oil looks okay. Gear shifter working fine.

I am no expert but I was wondering if this could be the torque converter on its way out or somthing to do with the differential. I only say this as the only time she let me down was when the torque converter broke and I lost drive completely. Its a hard one to find out what is wrong as it does not happen all the time.

Maybe jack up the rear and support on stands , try turning your wheels , to see if they feel smooth or clunky ??

Could it be the transfer dropping into neutral - though its probably the Auto

What do you do when the problem occurs

I reckon it sounds like an auto problem whether it is the TC or something else. Do you have a good Auto specialist nearby? Which part of the world is your Kent?

I back of the throttle to reduce the revs below 2k and this normally brings back the power. I think I will get the auto checked next and see if that is the issue.
Thanks for all your help to date.

update,

So she was okay for about a week without any issues, then one day last week I was taking the family down to the o2 in london and on start up she sounded like she was misfiring. I drove for about 50 yards and could hear a clonking noise under the car. I turned the engine off and restarted her and all was well again. I am now wondering if it could be electrical. Any thoughts most welcome.

I re read this it sounds to me like your ignition is cutting in and out the
clunk underneath is the slack in the drive train as ignition cuts in and out.
Check and/or replace your Dizzy, And check the timing as well
Other words get a tune up
