Just got meself some AVM manual hubs to replace the OEM auto hubs. It doesn't have these egg ring spacers I see mentioned from time to time but I have failed to find out what they are actually used for. And do I need to use them in my GUII?

Cheers.

Hey Mudski,

Do you mean Hub spacers? Like these? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/250765042733?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

No Rob, it's these (http://www.patrolapart.com.au/product/hub-nut-kits-sockets/nissan-patrol-free-wheeling-hub-egg-2/)

I discovered I had none in my hubs & bought some from Patrolapart. When on the phone to them, they reassurred me that driving without them in 2wd would do no harm, & probably not in light 4wd use (with hubs locked). They said that when problems would occur is in 4wd situations when the hubs are under heavy load. They told of alloy hubs 'exploding' in such circumstances.

They also said that it isn't uncommon to come across vehicles missing them.

Yeah I will be putting some in but what do they actually do? Obviously relieves pressure off something when under load...

the Egg ring is the smooth round ring that pushes into the hub first to space the step ring out.

That's a good question, as I thought the same thing when doing the rebuild.
Do they hold the outer race of the smaller bearing in place to eliminate side loading On both inner and outer races??

G'day Muddyman,
life's full of mysteries. That's just a fact. Normal people aren't meant to understand. As the poet famously said, 'our's not to wonder why.............'
As far as I know, one's called a spacer, the other is a bushing. If God didn't mean them to be there he wouldn't have created them, 'thanks be to God'.
In the Nissan system, I'd not consider leaving them out under any circumstances. No way. NEVER.
Other systems, go with their flow.

Got these rings how far do they go into the hub? Rigth upto the bearing. The AVM hubs I got have a step on them which locates it in the hub. Knock the rings in until theres enough for the step?
I still dont get how these are supposed to help too.

Thanks.

Straight ring in first, then lipped, with lip to the outer.
The outer On mine sits a few mm past the wheel hub and into the locking hub

Just found out the spacers arent needed if your using AVM hubs. Only if your using Nissan branded manual hubs. :what:

Yea.. Any reason why?? The might hold the guts of the lock hub in

Maybe the oem hubs dont have the step in it. As I cant see how this ring is supposed to do anything on the AVM hubs.

Muddy,
g'day mate.
In the GU manual (and if my faulty memory serves me, in the GQ also) under FRONT AXLE there is a full schematic of the axle assembly from the knuckle flange all the way out to the hub cap.
Section 'First edition Vol2'...that's SM7E-2Y61G1..dig up the section FA (Front axle) and you'll find the diag. you want on page 10.
If the unit you've bought is a different system/design, all bets are off and we go back to our drug of choice which at the moment is a heavily hopped lager. BLOODY GOOD. Say no more.
Ain't life good

Thanks Col. I was just thinking to have a dig in there and you've suggested the same thing.... Anyhow, I see the spacer and AVM setup is totally different. The AVM drive clutch bolts up to the hub first, then the selector screws into the drive clutch. Whereas on the OEM setup, the drive clutch just sits inside the hub and the selector bolts ontop of the clutch and onto the hub. So I'm confident it doesn't need them.
