Just wondering if anyone on here has installed a remote auto trans filter or has any info on which direction oil flows in and out of the cooler

Turn the car on and feel both hoses on the cooler till one warms up that's your inlet , can't say I've seen anyone put a filter on though

You can get a magnetic inline filter, I have seen them fitted to old auto pathfinders. I'll have a bit of a Google and see if I can find one.

Found some for like 20$ but not much info on how they help, might be more effort then its worth. Also they don't say how frequently you need to replace them.

They did put them on wd21 auto pathfinders because the auto boxes where really dirty. From what I read they work really well :-)

thanks for the replies, didnt even think of grabbing the pipes :), I already have a remote housing which will double for the trans temp sender, just don't want to plumb it in backwards

I found when fitting a extra auto cooler to my troll have the vehicle cold and someone to start car while you touch the cooler pipes as it only took seconds for pipes to heat up. the first time I did it by myself by the time I got out to see which was the inlet they where both hot.

Why would you bother? Never heard of a problem with a Patrol auto that would require an external filter. The more unnecessary stuff you muck about with - the more things that can go wrong.

i must agree, personally I would not bother with a external filter but I have fitted a heavy duty vale body with lock up switch and auto temp gauge. my type of driving is going to be totally different than most as I am towing a 3 tonne off road c/van. 99% of the time. have been for the last 2 years. I change fluid every 10.000 clicks by just dropping it out of the sump which is only about 4 litres worth and have only changed internal filter twice in its 110,000 klms life. every fluid change when dumped in a bucket I inspect for any types of foreign particles and to date is none. I also look at colour and smell of fluid. basically what I am saying is there are some good mods out there and yes some don't work but I am very happy with the up grade I have done to strengthen a very tough auto box in standard form. ps. I think if you are not towing or doing heavy beach work then leave it alone.
