Well I've had a chit day. Left Melbourne this morning an headed down to Geelong for a few days for work. Got back into the car after the second job and my key wouldn't turn. I had my spare, no go. I had the original key but with the chip removed, and after about 20 minutes of jiggling around I managed to get the key to turn but had to sit one of the other keys with the chip to the barrel so I could start the car.
Now. I have to leave the original key in the barrel with it almost turned off, just so I can turn the car on again. If you get that...
I rang Ni$$an and they want $450 for the barrel with a blank key, then another $160 to chip and cut it, but they reckon it wont be the same as the doors then...
So is there any locksmiths here or anyone know one in the northern burbs that can repair the original barrel? I know this can be done, just have to find someone who can...

Thanks.

I was gonna mention him, but wasn't actually sure if he really was a lock smith or, if it was just a username. Speaking of him, haven't seen him here for months.

You have a Locksmith????? Where was he when you locked your guns up mate????

Yeah I thought about "The Locksmith" too but yes I have not seen him on for a long time. You are right Drew he was not happy with how his ARB rant thread ended up. Not sure who he was most angry with??? I am pretty sure I was in the soup though??

Yeah, well, his whole rant got a bit OTT and unreasonable IMO.

Yeah but they do not muck about with gunsafes.... You have to see certain locksmiths only and I think they have a special licence or something??

Thats right the ARB thingy.... he seemed ok a bloke except he could not let that one go!!!!!! move on I say.

Seemed like an alright bloke, I even messaged him my self, when I was after a front bumper for a mate.
Last I seen, he was still attempting to eBay the bits, that ARB were supposedly selling off, worth $800/900. That bit sort of backfired on him. But anyways...

I agree that he seemed like a nice bloke. Perhaps he'll be back....

Have you tried spraying some lube (WD40 or similar) down the ignition barrel?

Hey mate. Yeah I soaked it good but no joy. Going to BA's locky this morning. Over the phone he doesn't think the barrel will be shot. He reckons the barrel on the Patrols is pretty tough and it's more likely a loose tumbler(I think he called it) or just that my keys are that worn it won't work.
We'll see.

Well all is good. BA's locky was a great help, AND he wants to buy a Patrol too!!!I rang a bloke I know at Essendon Nissan and he gave me the code for the ignition barrel and they first cut a key to the code. When he brought it out I knew straight away that it was going to work as it was so different to my old key. So that bit was sorted much quicker than I expected. $80 for that....Good.
THEN, I went off to Mr.Minit at my local shopping centre. As I had purchased a key with chip from another Mr.Minit last week. As I wanted a working spare they said they can use the chip from my dud cut key and use it in theirs as it will be much cheaper. $50 compared to the $150 I had already forked out last week...
This is the amusing part, well sort of. The guy said that my new key that was cut by a locksmith was NOT the right key and won't work. Erm, Hello! I just used it in my car and drove here!!! He was adamant that it was the incorrect key, so he proceeded to cut a new key with what he though was the right key. I go out and try it. Couldn't even get it in the barrel. I go back. I wait another 20 minutes, he gives me another cut key, he said he has used the same sort of key from my good one. I look at it and could see straight away that he hasn't cut it right, I told him and he said it will work. So off I go again, and guess bloody what. I don't work. I go back in again and he now says my barrel is stuffed and he wants to look at my car for himself to try but can't right now as he is on his own bla bla bla!
So I go out, and come back later when there is two of them. The other guy now comes out to my car, (young kid too) and looks, I tell him the bleeding obvious with the second cut key how its different. He goes back inside, makes a few adjustments and BAM! It works. Took the guy not even five minutes to do and the first guy over an hours and he still didn't get it right.
Before you say anything, the other Mr.Minit shop that the first, first key was cut from, is miles away and wasn't worth the trip down there, I would have spent more in fuel....
