Am in the process of searching for a Patrol Ute to tow me an the missus and our Topaz van arround Aussie. Have found an ex Ergon Energy Patrol that seems to fit the bill. It's a 09/09 build with a GVM upgrade made by ARB in 02/10 and subsequent registration in 05/10. It has all the fruit ARB lockers, winch, dual batteries blah blah. Has 83 k on the CRD motor. Only downside is the capstan option on the winch which makes the bullbar look fugly.
In my endeavours to research the motor I keep comming across comments that lament the Crd and enthusiastic support for the TD42 motor. I have now driven Patrols with both motors but can't see much difference driving them (seat of the pants) performance wise. Admittedly the 4.2's have some decent k's on them.
To me the main thing the 4.2 has going for it is the old school technology. The money the 4.2's are fetching astounds me. Your comments as to the relevant fors against for each motor would be welcomed.
Cheers
Gary

1. What's a capstan option on the winch
2. The 09 CRD are much less susceptible to grenading. Not much money needs to be spent to sort of safeguard yourself.
Search NADS FOR MORE INFO.
Much more torque in the 4.2.

The winch has drums on either end to facilitate cable pulling. Also I note both motors produce 360 nm at 2000rpm.

Yeah your not wrong. I went to the place that fabs them up they want 1900 bucks for the one without the cut outs. Figured if I bought this truck would weld in plates to cover up the gaps after I took off the drums.
I originally thought I could use the drums for winching but they are only usd for cable pulling with a max of 500 kg load rating.

The 4.2 has a little more low down torque, which makes it a little easier towing with a manual, especially getting off the mark with a weight on the back facing uphill.
The auto makes it even easier again, but is only available in the CRD.
For towing heavy loads, both require a little bit of modification to give them some extra oomph, from a chip and exhaust upgrade with the CRD, to a Turbo and Exhaust upgrade with the 4.2
I have a Manual CRD, and have no problems with it, but have owned both, so know how well a well setup vehicle goes, and even though I have towed big weights with both, I would say the 4.2 is probably the better tow vehicle.

Cheers mate for your response. I plan on towing my Topaz with a GVM 1950 KG what sort of weight are you towing with the CRD. I think the CRD has a Dual Mass Flywheel corrct me if Iam wrong are there any known issues with these? I have read there are issues with other makes especially when towing.

@ Mega capstan are normally found on boats you hook the rope twice around and away you go, Landrover have had them for years.
IMO better off with a 4.2 TD a far superior motor, some members here have well over 500,000k on them and still going like new

G'day Gazza,
pulled a 2T. van all over with a TD4.2 and later a 3.0CRD.
Larger normally aspirated versus smaller turbo for the extra horses. Only differences (I think) are
1) 4.2 is simple to work on, most parts are accessable, whilst the 3.0 with all the later computerised gear gives you a chockas engine bay and many many more electronically controlled bits. Me, I don't even like electric windows, just more poofy crap to fail when you're far from home.
2) towing isn't much different if you're highway cruising. If you work out consumption rates, you'll find your best cruising speed and you live with that. Mine is/was around the 95K's (with van).
3) for me, h/p is less use than torque if you're off road and working your way up a creek or over rocks which is my preferred scene. You can shove mud, not interested, too old. The td42 had a manual throttle and low revs grunt, a combination which I passionately loved. The 3.0CRD simply isn't at that place but with more revs and clutch use you still get there.
Finally, I'd still have the old one except I'm married and one of us was always worrying that at 400K plus and 20 years age yada, yada, yada, we'd get a breakdown and all die.
So, go get em tiger. The usual problems/questions we all face. Oh, and by the way, nothing wrong with the macho front of the wagon
regards
Col

Gary,
I have towed all my belongings to Alice Springs and back with my old 4.2 and it ate it up easy.
I have also towed well over 2 tonne of firewood ( guestimated ) on a tandem trailer stacked over the height of the edges of the trailer form Horsham to Melbourne with my Dtronic Chipped 3 Litre, and I was surprised by how easy it did it, especially going up the final hills into Melton on the Western Highway ( old section )...
They will both tow, and will both get there, but for me if I was towing constantly, I would head for the 4.2

Hey Col/Mic thanks for your responses. Col I think you hit the nail on the head I hate electic windows as well more crap to go wrong. My mates tell me I should embrace the electronic age and I have in some things but 4by's are another matter. But gee this truck has everything for a lot less folding stuff than I would have to shell out for a good 4.2. Oh yeah I would still plate up the bar fugly as.
I had better get my finger out an decide.

It's been a bit long winded :o but I am in the procees of buying a 2006 4.2 ute. I just chickened out on the electronics so staying old school. I must have looked at least a dozen vehicles since this post. From Landcruiser 1hdtfe utes, a new Mazda BT50. a new Mitsuibishi Dual Cab and a handful of 4.2 patrols including some with the Telstra bodies. The thing I am buying looks the goods and has a tray that will suit my purposes.
The missus and some of my mates were giving me a hard time about me procrastinating over the electronic issue I have, what a dinosaur :o.
I was just about giving up on the idea and keeping the old cruiser when this one just popped up. I started out with Nissan Patrols when a young lad and now have ended up with another Nissan in my doting years must be an omen.
Will now have to brush up on what makes Nissan Patrol's tick these days.
Cheers
