Hi
I've recently bought a 09 gu6 3lt. We went on a trip down south over the w/e and I noticed at 110 in 5th with c/c on a slight whistle as it would start to climb hills. I didn't think too much of it as it wasn't consistent that was untill I got on the beach, after 5 or so minutes (soft sand so working fairly hard) the "whistle" seemed to be constant when under load. I played around a bit and found it was only above 2500 rpm and from about half to full throttle anything under that and it wasnt there! I drove too and from work today and only heard it once at about 100 when I put my foot down but then couldn't get it to do it again :/ it's not a normal turbo whistle, more of a rattley whistle. The only way I can describe it is like a like an umpires whistle "with the pea" but higher pitched.
The cars got 70k on the the clock, doesn't blow any smoke and as far as I can tell has heaps of power (I've only had the car 4 weeks so I don't really know if its dropped power)!
Any ideas?? Should I be stressing??
Cheers

G'day mate and welcome to the forum. What you describe there is almost a perfect description of exactly what my car is doing.
I have a thread on it here.

I'm, yet to identify what it is though.

Hi hodge,
Cheers for the reply and the link, glad it's not just me. I'm almost 100% it's turbo related and as you said seems to be only when it warms up a bit, I'm thinking impeller?

Honestly no idea mate, I haven't had it looked at since July, and it's not better or worse. Exactly the same, under a bit of load at around or just above 2000RPM it develops that extra sound, on top of the regular turbo whistle. Also if you read down that thread a bit more, I mention that It in fact does it from the moment I turn the car on and get moving. Nowhere near warmed up.
When I had it looked at on the dyno, that sound didn't appear to be in-line with the regular turbo whistle, it sort of lagged a bit. The bloke there, told me if it were any moving parts in the turbo, it would be perfect timing with the turbo whistle. But that's not to say it isn't the impeller. He also mentioned he's never seen a turbo in a CRD go under 100k.
Mind you our problems could be completely different things lol.

Guys I have heard of this whistle problem from some one else and for the life of them they couldn't find it.Car went in for a service and they mentioned the whistle got the car back all fixed..Ended up being the EGR valve gasket had shat itself..Hope that helps you out..

Could be your exhaust manifold mine warped and needed machining as it was whistling as you describe.

I'm with WA or Megatexture,
I would say it is something to do with either the EGR Valve, as they do have a habit of warping causing this type of sound. The fix is anything from removal and making it a flat surface again by sanding / refinishing, replacement of the EGR Valve itself if it has split, or blocking both ends with a solid gasket.
There are some that get fault codes from doing a full EGR Block, which need to be cleared to remove....
The other main culprit is the exhaust manifold itself.

Without being too knowledgeable in this area, how big of a job is to replace this valve? Or if i blocked the egr would this by pass this valve ? tbh I wouldn't even know where this valve sits.

Standing in front looking at your Patrol ,once you remove the engine cover you'll see a silver pipe on the LHS of the motor.
that will be the EGR pipe most here will block it at the top with a blanking off plate,
get onto Mudski he will have them for your model.

Cheers TD. I knew that was the egr pipe just not sure where the actual valve sits. Or is that where it actually is ??
Wish egr pipe was more accsible like on my previous fourby (d22). It was right at the front of engine so easy to tinker with nothing to remove to get to.

Easier on the Di than the CRD ,but by blocking it , it achieves the same thing
