Hey folks,

Just a quick question, are the air con compressors the same across all gu's or are they engine specific??

The bearing in mine is shot and it sounds horrible, i have seen 1 off a 2000 ZD30 for cheap, but none for a 4.5L

Cheers
Lachlan

Almost certainly different. If its still cold then think about changing the bearing as the compressors are expensive. If you can keep the gas in the one will save you a couple $100 too

Damn. I just went through the manual to see whats involved in pulling it apart, looks like it has to be removed from the car because you need to use a puller to remove the pulley and i think it would be a massive pain the the rrrss to get a puller in there.

It still works, its just noisy. Is there any way to re lubricate it without complete dismantle?

Pull out radiator then you might get puller in, bearing can be swapped out

Going by the manual, it looks like it needs specialist tools to remove the clutch. Any one know of a good ac shop in brisbane area?

Thanks for the info guys

Buy the tool from a good tool shop. This won't be the last time you need to change it

Yep I agree, if your handy with a spanner then you will pay for the tool and still save on having it done by an Auto Elec. if your not up for it then pm Yendor, he might be interested in the job. I think he is in Brisbane isn't he?

I found this in my shed. It might do the trick. I couldn't get a look at the pulley on my air con unit.

Doing mine right now!! Well just stopped as I was given the wrong bearing from the bearing shop. On my ZD30 all that needed to be removed is the radiator shroud and belt.

you need to remove the cover plate using 3 x, 5mm x 35mm bolts, so...
On the face of the compressor there is a 10mm hex nut in the middle, undo this, but after you have screwed in the three bolts as you also need these as leverage with a screw driver to stop the pulley from spinning.
Once the nut is off, even go around the three bolts to push out the cover plate.
Once its off there is a circlip, remove circlip.
then you will need a gear puller to remove the pulley.
Once off all you need to do is press out the old bearing and replace.
Then put it back together.
Took a whole 15 minutes to get totally apart. Between beers of course.
But now it has to go back together with a foobar bearing as I need my car so lets hope it last until I get the right bearing.

This is all for a ZD30 but most A/c pump should be along the same lines of some sort I would think...

Thanks for that. Would it make it easier to pull the clutch off with a puller similar to what NP99 posted a pic of or not needed??

I am assuming the bearing is in the pulley?

I wish i had of got motivated to look into this last week as i only just had the rad out to clean it

Thanks mate. Now i know its not a massive job i should be right. I have a bearing shop about 2 mins from my house so it shouldnt really be an issue. A mate has a press too. But i will remember that just incase i come unstuck. Plus my missus's old man has just about every tool under the sun

No worries, enjoy the job! Could you also publish the bearing part no prior to installation?
PM sent
