The weathers gone from bad to worse in Queensland today, there was flash flooding in Toowoomba of all places. For those not familiar with Toowoomba IT'S ON TOP OF A HILL!
Check out this video, this is the main road through Toowoomba.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt-FT-skins

All that water rushed down the hill wiping out anything in it's path. Emergency services are totally overwhelmed.

It's just unbelievable what's going on. Looks like an inland tsunami that hit Toowoomba with a wall of water 8m high took out everything in its way.....FULL ON

It looks like its going towards Brisbane

All QLDers effected, hope you all stay safe

As tragic as it is, thank you to everybody who has filmed the flood. It gives the world an insight of what's happening in your part of the world. I'm sure there are many young people who will never, ever, forget this flood.

Please, take care out there.

Now is the time for Victorians to repay Queensland for all of their help during our Fires

Not sure if you've seen the satellite shots on the news, but one of the "bodies of water" (i.e inland sea) currently in Queensland covers the area of France and Germany combined ... they are releasing the equivalent (as of midday yesterday) of half the water in Sydney Harbour every hour over the combined spillways in the south east ... it has to be seen to be believed ... the water simply has no where to go. My family is cutoff where they live and have been for a few days, but at least they are high up - it is utter devastation for those not so fortunate.

It is hitting Brissy - 30 Suburbs on standby for flood evacs, West End is already evaucated ... high tide this arvo, coupled with all the water from the range, AND they are releasing water from the spillway at Wivenhoe Dam as it is about to breach ... the worst is yet to come for Bris Vegas and the police and government have cancelled all travel if not emergency etc - as you could imagine, everyone is trying to get home and it is dead set anarchy on the roads ... stay safe people!!!

The flooding crisis is now moving to Brisbane, they are evacuating the CBD which is unbelievable. The water from the flash floods in Towoomba yesterday has moved downstream and is heading for Brisbane. The Brisbane river is due to peak about 2.30pm local time and it's a king tide.

When I left for work this morning the water in the creeks I drive over was about 10cm below road level. I came home at 11am just before the roads were closed. My sons kindy called to say they were closing and to come and get the kids. The local shop is doing a roaring trade as people stock up, no one knows what is going to happen next. The Woolies in Jimboomba has already closed. I have never seen anything like this before.

It broke my heart yesterday seeing helicopter coverage on channel 7 showing a family trapped in a white 4WD stuck in the middle of a paddock that had been swamped by a raging torrent of water about 400m wide. The family had climbed onto the roof of the car. The chopper landed briefly to pick up a fire and rescue officer but when they returned the car had been swept away and has not been seen since. No one wants to say it but that was probably the last time those people were seen alive. Heart breaking stuff.

I'm one of the lucky ones, my family is all at home with me and safe, we might get cut off for a few days but our house is not in danger.

My thoughts go out to those less fortunate.

We're going through that right now ... the mate who is on the videos I posted (drives the BT50 - dhuck has met him, my best mate and a top bloke) is getting deluged - was ok earlier this morning, but his wife is a nurse (shift work) and is on her way home - she is currently stuck on the d'Aguilar highway and it looks like his driveway (long and raised) might wash out so literally can't get off his property and the missus can't get in even if she gets through ... both neighbours dams either side of him have broken and have swollen over the road out the front also ... unbelievable ... my prayers are with everyone.

There was some partial good news about the family in the swept away car that Tony was talking about. The brother of the bloke in the car talked to the media and stated that the mother and child had been rescued. However the tragic side is that the bloke in the car is 1 of the 72+ people missing.

This is a tragic time for Qld. I and along with so many other ppl have had friends/family evacuated from the ravaged area west of Brisbane.

The next area is Northern NSW. Unfortunately my father in-law lives on the Richmond River which is now also flooding. We have not yet been able to contact them. Hopefully they have done what they usually do this time of year and headed South. Then we also have family near Bellengen near Coffs. It is also now flooding.

By next week they expect 5 states in flood.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all who are affected.

Anna Bligh just held a press conference and they are to release water starting today from the Wivenhoe .. currently flood levels are around 2-2.5m expecting that to rise to 3+m by tonight, 4.5m by lunch tomorrow and they aren't sure there after ... all they do know is officially it will be a far higher level than the 74 floods ... we haven't seen the worst of it yet ...

I think what Nanna Bligh meant to say was they are going to open the gates further. The flood gates at Wivenhoe have been open for a while. Yesterday they increased the spill to something like 110,000 mega litres. Inflow to the dam was over 1 million mega litres at the same time.

Copied from Qld Times website;

THE Wivenhoe Dam yesterday hit record levels following recent weeks of near-incessant rain in the Ipswich region.

And the most recent dam to be built in the region, the Wyaralong Dam, reached 80 per cent capacity only a month after being ready to hold water.

The dam, which is south of Ipswich between Boonah and Beaudesert, held 83,133 megalitres yesterday, which is 80.7 per cent of its 103,000 megalitre capacity.

A spokesperson for the SEQ Water Grid Manager said the Wivenhoe Dam was currently about 154 per cent full, with the Somerset Dam about 158 per cent.

The drinking water level of Wivenhoe is at 100 per cent, with the remaining 40 per cent level the amount currently held for flood mitigation.

“It is the highest level the dam has been at since construction,” a spokesperson said.

In order to relieve the quickly filling flood storage compartment, controlled releases from the dam increased yesterday from 116,000 megalitres per day to 170,000 megalitres a day.

Although releases are being made, large quantities of water continue to flow into the dams and are being held back in order to manage impacts downstream.

A spokesperson said the releases were a necessity because the Wivenhoe Dam was receiving more than twice the volume of Sydney Harbour each day.

SEQ Water Grid chief executive Barry Dennien said the dam’s mitigation measures were doing their job, and release levels were being carefully monitored.

Parts of the Wyaralong Dam are still under construction, but its wall was plugged to hold water on December 17 last year.

Queensland Water Infrastructure chief executive officer Frankie Carroll said the dam had reached its current capacity after weeks of heavy rain.

OMG, been working indoors all day watching the big screen and I was absoulutely gob smacked.
I could not believe what I was seeing, it was like 911.
Like Andy said, donations do help but wish there was more we could do to help out.
It is absoulutely heart breaking to see.
My thoughts and prayers are with all stuck in the devastation up there.
And as Bob says, time for Vic to step up, I think its time for all the other states as well, we are one country.
If we cant stand behind this great country as a whole, what have we become.
Hope all in the QLD region affected by this Stay safe and stay strong.
Glad to hear you are OK up there Tony and hope all other QLD members are as well.

Cheers Pete

My family is just north of Hervey Bay - brother is the manager of the local woolworths, and the problem now is food/necessity shortages as trucks can't get through. He said the entire produce section is empty (literally not a cabbage, an apple, etc) with other items like milk, bottled water, tea, coffee, toilet paper, bread, etc, etc also empty - his exact words was it is like you see in apocalyptic movies ... no one there, shelves empty ...

Too right mate - moreso for me, I'm thinking of free labouring - concreter by trade many moons ago (not that long ago!!), and not too 'unhandy' on the hammer etc, so figure I'll aim to assist rebuilds etc ... that's the plan until the SES say I have the frame that is best used for a corner weight on a tarp!! LOL ... planning on me and, as it turns out now, the old boy going out together in the Wide Bay region and offering assistance ..

It's what makes us what we are mate ... without it, we are lost ... just been on the phone to the old boy again, and we are dead set struggling as to where to start. Going to throw all the tools and any spare gear (tarps, ropes, pegs, linen, old clothes, etc) in the cars - both patrols!!! hey? hey? yeah baby!!! - and then head out under direction of the SES or one of the local council authorities and just literally help out where we can ... now is one of those times where I reckon if I can make just the smallest amount of positive change for someone less fortunate, then good job done!!

We around Tony and myself will suffer from being stranded from light to moderate flooding at the moment. We don't have any flood warnings for our district yet.

Toowoomba has caused Ipswich to go into Massive flood which will flow to Brisbane combining with Wivenhoe dam release flooding said parts of Brisbane. Logan is being told to take care but not to panic yet as their is no immediate threat to us.

The cut roads and minor flooding is a hinderance, but I am thankful I am not in Ipswich/Brisbane or the other areas that have been devastated.

The way I see it, your yard will be empty in a week or two ... the cleanup operation is of the most immense proportions ... this is the sort of stuff we see on the news at night that has occurred in other countries ... the devastation to lives, homes, properties, farms, infrastructure etc is beyond comprehension ... to put this in perspective (at the simplest and most easily understood level), I challenge anyone to do 10klm of driving on any road in the South East (not including major highways, but even they are affected) and not come across multiple potholes/washouts in the road from rain/water damage ... it is that bad!!! Great 2 heart ur work is talking about incentives 2 people 2 help out, unfortunately more people would probable offer there service no matter how far away they may reside, but are 2 worried about there work, 2 offer there service :(

Well yeah you are right, Todd,. Without the work you can't pay the bills unfortunately. Even if I can't get to work I can claim Holiday pay so I can still pay bills. But now we have six of our branches under water, Our branch is the closest branch to help with gear.
