Hi,

I have decided that a GU Patrol is for me but what year model I'm really not sure???
Just looking for people's thoughts/opinions really pros and cons

Budget up to $35k (then I will do mods as funds allow

What I want out of it
- daily driver for wife to go to work
- very comfortable highway cruiser
- very capable off roader to go camping on beaches etc most weekends
- easy and reasonable price parts extras available
- something that has no major problems for that model ( or is that not realistic?)

Really just looking for advice before I even hit the car yards so I know what to stay away from or getting talked into something I'm not really after. ( I hate used car sales men anyway) lol

Look forward to your guys thoughts

I literally just bought a 2008 GU wagon and I love it !! Paid just under $30 for it stock standard with Bull bar & tow bar but have seen similar for upto $35 (depending on colour - I wanted dark grey but for $5+ saving I got white)

Was looking for what seemed like FOREVER before I found "the" one for me ;)

Upgraded (not by choice) from an 07' D40 Navara which was 3ltr - difference is minimal to me other than Navara was manual and my patrol is auto ...

And yeah the 4.2 is freeking awesome! My partner has 4.2ltr ute ;)

The TD 4.2s will go for ever and at a premium price,
but you should get a decent run from a CRD.
are you especially after a diesel??? auto/manual ???

First Patrol

Yes diesel is the preference I'm not really too worried bout transmission but auto would be nice

Thoughts?

Most are auto these days, But try and get the best spec you can
I even think Ti are diesel now, but ST-L are cool with a bit of leather
what area are you in?

I'm in Gladstone QLD.
Ok so is it worth breaking the bank to get a 06 4.2l as a pose to a newer CRD for $10k cheaper? I'm not gonna be going hardcore off road (yet). I guess the 4.2l will hold value more though??
Prob best for me to go test drive a 3l and see what I think

The td4.2s are good but I personally don't think they're worth the money they command. If your not planning on doing heavy towing, then go for the 3ltr donk, you can still go hard in them. You'll get a newer car with much less k's for your budget, then you'll have more dough left over for what ever mods you want to do.

If you can find a 4.2 that suits your needs go for , it may even increase in value.
And if you have boys they can drive it and their children can drive it and so on.
Awesome motor, even ppl with 3ltr motors are doing engine conversions to the 4.2 TD

Mate if you are in no hurry wait till the right priced 4.2 GU comes along, it will take time but they are out there, I bought mine a 2004 for 30 k and one of the other guys over here got one recently for 20 k which was a fantastic buy, if you are not fussed you can get a good late model 3 ltr for around the same money. IMO there's nothing wrong with the 3 ltr as long as its a 2007 or later.take your time and look around.

Thanks guys, as I was hoping I'm a bit more educated up now and thanks Eric on those links!
So why a post 2007 3.0l?? BTW

Because early version 3.0L had a knack of blowing up, the later model ones are CRD and are probably more efficient.

So why a post 2007 3.0l?? BTW

The 2000 and 2001 3 litres gained a reputation as a grenade.

The 2007 model year was when they changed to the CRD engine - essentially the same engine but better managed by the computer.

In between are the proverbial 50 shades of grey where you will find that the later the vehicle the more reliable it is likely to be.

There is a system of modifications known as NADS (Nissan Anti Detonation System) that will make your 3 litre Patrol much more reliable and if you buy a pre-2007 model then you would be wise to follow that well trodden path.

The 4.2 is known throughout the motoring world as probably the most reliable engine in a car and it is for that reason that they have the premium price placed on them. Note that the 4.2 is actually less powerful and grunty than the 3 litre so don't buy one and expect it to blow a 3 litre off at the lights - it IS smoother to drive though.

Too right! If you were sharp you could pick up a 4.2 for a smidge over 30K

oh the other thing you need to look out for is the the dash........... some maybe be covered in ugly pimples. You were able to get them replaced in cars up to 6 years old but you won't stand much chance in anything older.

well this is a little bit over your $35K but is virtually new with just about everything you would need already done.

That last one, would that be converted, or the 250 k's a typo?
I'm not sure when the last 4.2 was made, I thought 04 but could be wrong..
Best motor ever And bloody emissions controls f-ed it for everyone..

Nothing wrong with the later 3ltr's as the boys have said..
Just don't rush it, and enjoy the search..
Test drive heaps and have fun.
