Does it do it when you lift off as well or only when braking?

vaccum brake booster leak probably just the hose cant remember for sure but if you take one end of the hose off and block it the revs should drop??? ask Atillis/George as i am sure he can tell you the correct test method at home

I think that's pretty normal.. How much you talking? 100rpm. Mine use to.. Also when depressing the clutch. Not really noticeable On the tacho, but noticed a nite difference with the motor..

If you had a leak why would I cause a drop? It would be sucking all the time. A leak would causes ineffective brakes.

Thinking now I do seem to have to pump the brakes a bit before driving off.

I think you need to give us more info.Motor, model etc etc or. Does it do this whilst stationary and you put on the brakes? Revs drop by how much?
Being auto I would assume the revs would drop more than manual because of the torque converter still spinning from the revs of the engine??? Pulling at straws here.
