G'day everyone,

Last weekend I completed my first home DIY service. I changed the oil and filter, eventually changed the fuel filter last night thanks to some upside down advice and also changed my large air filter.

Whilst I removed the air filter (I also cleaned the MAF), I saw there were lots of deaded bugs and the like at the bottom of the round filter holder thingy. I have a snorkel fitted (genuine type) and have been doing some research on the UNI Filter (http://www.uniflow.com.au/contents/en-us/d2.html). I have also had some other fellas from work suggest I get one to help keep alot of dirt and crap out as townsville can get a bit dusty.

Has anyone here used these filters and did you find they worked well for either a daily use item or just for the long haul.

Many thanks for your time

Adam

G'day Jackman,
reckon the main decider would be what sort of driving you do and how much of a problem collected crap on the filter is causing you at the moment.
Done a bit of dusty driving over about 20 years and found that tapping or better still, blowing (when you can access an air jet) any dust out regularly in that terrain keeps you breathing well enough. That may mean each day in extreme conditions. Coupla dead bugs never worried me but I'm probably a bit rough anyway. Missus would go with that but I dunno why.
The product looks good but remember, if the standard filter needs regular servicing, the new Mickey Mouse model will also.
Good luck,
Col

I have a 4.5L, the air cleaner is a pain to remove and inspect, even after i modded things to make it easier, so cleaning the filter every day after driving in dust is not very practical.

Now I use a Uni pre filter on my snorkel head (safari snorkel) when in dusty conditions, if find it works very well, (especially when you are a few cars back in a convoy) and its so easy to remove and clean, plus you can see how dirty it is without opening the bonnet.

The other good thing about safari snorkels is you can reverse the intake/head direction, but to be honest, i dont bother when using my pre filter.

From what ive seen the uni pre filters don't realy fit the genuine heads unless they have made a new design unfortunately, not sure about the sock that slides inside.

Looking at mine id have to agree mega, the nissan head is rounded and laid back, where the safari is upright and square, the uni filter fits the square perfect.

The internal ones should work, but then you have to remove the head to inspect it each time.

Does that "sock" insert stop the noise of the snorkel when you back off??

You could always raid your missus stocking drawer and grab a set and cut to fit on the snorkel head

Never underestimate the power of the darkside, let the tap flow through you.

They used to say when you're on a good thing, stick to it but nobody told Mr.Nissan.
The pre (first) air filter on my old 4.2GQ was a breeze to pull, the one filter on the 3.0CRD is a bit crappy to get to but really not bad at all so why would he have made an important to remove filter on a 4.5 a dog I wonder? Yet another automotive mystery I guess.

p.s. Doggy, there I was thinking I'd seen all the really ugly things already. Shooooot!!
