Hi all, wrong forum I know but a few have said they used to ride bikes.

While the patrol is off the road I have been cruising around on a dr650, and the headlight is terrible. Being that I am starting and finishing work in the dark, I would love to upgrade it.

Any recommendations?

Cheers!

Hahaha don't worry boots I have toyed with the idea.

Is a hid upgrade just a simple swapping of the bulbs?

Cheers

Does it have a battery or just run off the stator?

If it doesnt run a battery then your options are very limited and you'd get more light out of a good quality handle bar mounted led torch.

I went through the same process trying to get light out of my XR

Just about. Buy the kit and you swap out the globe and splice the wire into the new plug. Easy as.

I ride a 1400GTR Kawasaki. It has dual headlights. Standard H4 hi/lo. I upgraded to a pair of 100+ globes from Repco. It made a huge difference. HID is not so easy on a bike..... Try the 100+ first.

I think you have a sealed beam unit on your bike see if you can swap it out for unsealed and put new globes in otherwise see if the sealed units come in higher ranges eg 55/100. Most headlights are 55/60.

The big question is: battery or no battery?
If it's an old Dr with kick start and no battery it simply doesn't have enough power to run big bright lights

Not as silly as you think. My mate has a little light bar on his postie.

What about HID though? You get more light out of less power.

Not sure about that. It was 2 or 3 years ago when I was looking into it and I couldn't find any products at all, which isn't to say that someone couldn't make their own up.
With my xr, if you indicated and braked, you could see the brake light dim every time the indicator flashed. Also the headlight would increase in brightness as the revs went up.
Would hid's like the changing voltage?
EDIT: the kits I could find were for enduro riding and included fitting a battery

I'm not sure to be honest. The led bar on my mates postie flickers when he is idling other than that it is bright as he'll.

Thanks for the replies.

It does have a battery, and is electric start only. Im plannnng to pull it out today and have a look at it.

@ 93patrol, what do the numbers you have quoted mean? I'm clueless when it comes to these thing!

Cheers

Go for a globe upgrade first. LED options are available or look at getting a driving light kit (spotlights / led's etc) that will bolt on to several front forks and has a pair of extra lights on them, they tap into your existing hi beam
