So my rearview mirror was wobbling around a bit and on closer inspection it had been mounted / repaired like a dogs breakfast.
I needed to purchase one of these

As the old one was knackered and the previous owner had just tek screwed the mirror on to it....
Does Nissan just use a self tapper to attach the mirror or is there some other mystery way that they do it?
Thanks in advance.

That base screws into the roof and the mirror screws into that. It is supposed to act as a weak point so that it will break in case of an accident, but they are pretty flimsy and I've broken one just adjusting the mirror.

Yup, understand that, I'm wanting to know what attaches the mirror to the above base. I would have though the base would have had a captive nut or similar on the the back of it for a decent bolt to got through the mirror then through the base but it seems as though a self tapper is the only method?

And you can see how much of a mess the last one was..

That centre hole should be threaded?

That's what I thought ( or captive nut on back but its just flat.. ) as I thought a self tapper would just work lose again as it is the only thing holding the mirror on.
Doesn't seem to be any other option as since the mirror covers the whole base you need to attach base first then the mirror.

So it sounds like you're just missing the right screw?

Seems like it, it's just that the old one was such a mess it sort of threw me when I got the new one.

Yep thats what i thought. Just take the packer down to the local Bolt place or even Nissan to be honest and they will sort out a single bolt for you.
Note that your Nissan is Metric so you could likely take that to Bunnings or Repco and source a countersunk M6 or M8 bolt for it?? I dont think it will be M4
If you go to your local Repco or Supercheap they have one of those testing stations in the Unipac Bolt section with a thread of every size on t for you to check the nut and thread. Just screw it on there and find the one you need.
OR........ Go the Self Tapper! ;) Its designed to break on impact as stated above by Winnie. So the bracket is bolted to the car and the mirror is bolted to the bracket with the weak link being the ring in the middle. As long as you can screw tight up to that you will not have a problem. You Self Tapper is unlikely to com loose if its tapped into Plastic and done tight.

If I remember correctly it is just a self tapper
Yep mine is broken 2, never bother to fix it. Just used the self tapered screw to screw the mirror straight to the roof never had a problem with it coming loose

The round plastic in the center of my base broke out with the screw still in it. Will try to screw directly into the roof...:bananarock:
