Well fingers crossed gentlemen! Bloody unlikely but wouldn't this be great!

Nissan Aims At Truck Relevance With Titan-Cummins Diesel Deal

It didn’t take Nissan long to turn its poaching of Fred Diaz from Ram into a daring gambit on the product side. With his bid to use a diesel engine and a co-branding relationship with Cummins CMI -0.51% to provide new relevance to the tired Titan pick-up truck line, the new U.S. chief of Nissan sales and marketing has wasted no time in going after one of his old employer’s most important franchises.

Although he jumped to Nissan from CEO of the Ram brand only in April, Diaz already struck a deal with Cummins to provide a 5.0-liter, V-8 turbodiesel engine that will be offered as an option on the overhauled Titan that Nissan plans to introduce for the 2015 model year. It’s a different power plant than the 6.7-liter, inline-six turbodiesel that Cummins produces for Ram. But “we will definitely leverage the Cummins brand name,” a Nissan spokesman said.

The heavy-duty part of the pickup market gained new momentum a couple of years ago, before the general truck segment began catching fire this year. And for Ram, being able to offer a Cummins diesel was crucial in helping it compete with juicier heavy-duty offerings by General Motors GM -0.4% and Ford.

Now, in the annals of auto-company personnel swaps that made a big difference in a hurry, the acquisition of Diaz and his knowledge of the Cummins connection isn’t likely to prove as legendary a move as, say, when Lee Iacocca was booted from Ford. The legendary car chieftain took the minivan concept with him to Chrysler, where it remade not only the company but actually the entire U.S. auto market in the Eighties.

And it isn’t clear to what extent Nissan already may have been talking with Cummins or even considering a deal before Nissan lured Diaz.

But one thing is clear: No one in the industry understood better than Diaz what co-branding with Cummins could do for a pickup-truck brand, because he presided over the happy results at Ram.

And it would have been difficult for Nissan to have recruited anyone with more chops on the pickup front than Diaz. He presided over Ram at a key time — when it was transitioning away from being part of the Dodge brand, when Ram took opportunistic advantage of a lull by rivals and introduced a significantly overhauled version of the 1500 last year, and when Ram scored big marketing points with its evocative “Farmer” TV ad during the most recent Super Bowl.

For sure, Titan can use all the help Diaz can give it. The tired old model hasn’t been significantly revamped since it was introduced a decade ago. Titan sales dropped by 21 percent for the year to date through July compared with a year ago, while Nissan’s overall U.S. sales rose by 9 percent.

It’ll take a lot more than a Cummins engine and logo on a Titan for Nissan to make its pickup-truck brand relevant, even in a rising market, because each of the Detroit Three seems to be taking full advantage of the new lease on life being enjoyed by the pickup segment. But if Nissan has a shot, Diaz certainly is the man to take it.

Yours has a pic so let it stay :).

Even more exciting is its a cummins motor, who I now work for :). Parts are cheaper and they are more reliable than the majority of Nissan diesels :).

Its been stated that it will not reach our patrols in either y61 or y62 as apparently we are the ony ones who want a diesel everyone is happy with just a petrol they are saying no to even the v6 that's in the nav and pathfinder really why would you get a pathfinder over te patrol?

So they're not planning to put it in the y62? I've known a few people who have gone the 200 over the y62, purely for the diesel. The mind baffles sometimes.

2014 Innovations Winner: Cummins 5.0L V8 diesel engine

Tom Jackson

| January 06, 2014 |

CummnsWith the introduction of the Cummins 5.0L V8, a lightweight, technologically sophisticated V8 diesel engine, Cummins has changed the game when it comes to powerplants for light- and medium-duty applications.

The engine has two names and two iterations. The ISV5.0 is the commercial version of the engine. Cummins is positioning this as a fuel-efficient alternative to big gasoline engines in applications such as school buses, walk-in vans, medium-duty trucks and RVs.

What has the pickup truck crowd abuzz is the fact that Cummins is also configuring this same platform as a diesel engine for the gasoline-dominated world of 1/2-ton and 3/4-ton pickup trucks and calling it the Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel. This version will make its first appearance in the pickup truck world as an option on the Nissan Titan pickup starting in 2014.

The eight-cylinder power plant features a number of new technologies for Cummins, including a lightweight compacted graphite iron block, composite valve covers, and an advanced ceramic glow plug system. These glow plugs can deliver start times in under two seconds in temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees F.

Additionally, the engine features a forged steel crankshaft, high strength aluminum alloy heads, dual overhead camshafts, high pressure common rail fuel delivery and a variable geometry turbocharger. Cummins also designed the engine with multiple front-end accessory drive options to tie into the alternator, air compressor, AC compressor and hydraulic pump.

One of the key design criteria was to substantially reduce noise – one of the common complaints people voice about diesels. Practically speaking this means you don’t have to shut off the engine to be heard when you’re ordering at the takeout window.

The history of this engine dates back to the early 2000s, when Cummins and the U.S. Department of Energy collaborated on a jointly funded research project to explore the possibility of a light-duty, automotive diesel engine, says Michael Taylor, director of customer engineering and business development. Shortly afterward, Chrysler expressed interest in the possibility of a small diesel for its Ram brand 1/2-ton pickups and joined the effort.

In 2006 Cummins announced its light-duty diesel program and the partnership with Ram. In 2008 and 2009 when the economy tanked, Chrysler got cold feet and withdrew from the project. Nissan, which had also been involved with the development, stayed in the game and Cummins forged ahead.

One of the big challenges was developing the manufacturing processes for the compacted graphite iron block. “That decision had to be made fairly early from a manufacturing standpoint,” says Taylor, “It’s a significant decision to go that route. You have to set up your manufacturing processes to be optimized for those materials.”

Cummins felt all along that there would be sufficient demand for this type of lightweight, automotive-style diesel to justify the development of what would be come one of the company’s biggest product launches in years. An independent survey of truck owners conducted prior to the launch indicated to the company that possibly as many as 300,000 customers would seriously consider buying a full size truck if they could get it with a Cummins diesel.

That’s a lot of customers any way you look at it, but Cummins points to the success of their in-line six cylinder diesel option for the Ram 2500 truck. When this was first announced, Chrysler thought they might sell 10,000 a year. They started taking orders in June 1998 and had 22,000 orders from dealers by January 1989.

Why We Like It
Truck owners have been clamoring for a small diesel for years – only to be met with a wait-and-see attitude from Detroit’s Big Three. Cummins took the initiative, spending more than a decade and many millions of dollars to fulfill that desire for a high torque, fuel-efficient, 1/2-ton pickup. Given the population of buyers who prefer 1/2-ton trucks and the growing interest American drivers are showing for fuel-efficient diesels, the Cummins 5.0L V8 is clearly a welcome development the industry and the market.

A long time ago I came to the conclusion that we don't get the good stuff living in Australia and if we do ever get it its been available overseas for 20years.

Someone please bump it up again when if ever its released in Australia

I am starting to hear rumours that at least one of the engine conversion specialists are already making moves to import these from the US as soon as they are available. Might see it in a Y-61 before a Y-62....

If you were ever to see one of these motors in any Nissan beyond the Y61, it would'nt be a vehicle worthy of heading of any dirt road!

Its now 2014 and we are still waiting for some more news on this. Would love them to get a move on as I'd love a new car and Australia has very limited options at the moment. Seriously considering a 24v 6bt for the Y61.
