View Full Version : TD42T performance additions - where's the sweet spot?

Looking at the various performance upgrades for a TD42T/Ti. for touring/towing applications. What are the various levels of upgrades and rough costs assuming work done by a shop. Lets say a standard motor pumps out 70rwkw:

Quality 3" pipe, tune = +20rwkw, $2k
Aftermarket turbo, tune = +?rwkw, $3k
CC Intercooler = +?rwkw, $2k
Turbo high flow mods = +?rwkw, $?k
Others?

At what point do you need better performing injectors? I see a lot of talk about rwkw but not much about nm. What is the sweet spot for performance upgrades for towing/touring without pouring money down the drain?

Thanks for your input

cheers
Mike

Hi Mike a few local guys did massive amounts of engine work on the 4.8 petrol motors, ended up getting 335 RKw, this was in a GQ ute.
These were seriously fast 4x4 of the 2 I knew, they were pulling 14.5sec 1/4 mile times. They enamelled the inside of the motor, de burred the block.
huge turbos fitted. I know they could spin all 4 in the wet at 100 kph. Equal length headers, if you need to talk to him give me a shout.
He did huge amounts of work to the diesel as well entering Tuff Truck in the early days

Hi mate. End of the day Its what you want and how deep your pockets are.
You mentioned exhaust, great start. Pair that with a chip and you have a fair gain.
Now with the TD's they don't increase heaps in kW's but the go insane On the torque, which if towing is what you want..

So once exhaust and chipped, a good tune and most blokes are extremely happy at that..

If you want bigger numbers check out the members rides section, a few guys now getting big numbers of, imo quite mild setups..

Thanks guys. One shop I spoke to offer a 160-180rwkw offering with chip, custom pump/injectors, turbo, CC intercooler, aluminium radiator and tuning for $12k which is a lot of coin. So it got me wondering what each bit adds and where the sweet spot is, particularly for a touring rig where economy and reliability are key variables.

A highly modded patrol wont return economy but I think Nissanewby gets good returns for modifications done.
Throwing $12k at your Patrol how would you expect to recoup any of that, Personally I don't think it possible,
Might be $12k that could be spent elsewhere??
Bigger exhaust, a chip if applicable and larger radiator for towing

I spent less than a third of that, new turbo and intercooler, and am getting 120kw with 12L/100km fuel economy.

Yea I'm with above, the stock setup can handle quite an increase.
If you get to benny's and winnies setups and want more then you start talking $$$.. Bigger pumps, custom intakes etc (as Benny is doing now).
Not sure how far a stock injector can be pushed..
Diesel ain't like petrol, where you need heaps of it for good gains. In a NA setup their air starved, thus why turbos make such good figures with little work. Your main aim with a diesel is to get the right mix and cold..

The outright best value for money mod is a high quality ( I mean using top shelf componants) is water methanol injection for the best part of 1000 bucks you can see up to 70 rwkw

You can see more if you have a electronic contoller which is full programmable

Being the question is about a TD42Ti you won't be ale to chip it. A 3" mandrel bent straight through exhaust including the dump pipe and a decent Dyno tune will set you back about $1000 if you shop around. You will drive in with about 65rwkw and drive out with 95 to 100rwkw.

You will need a variable boost controller too and I recommend a Pyro Gauge too so add another $500 for that but a great place to start.

Once the above is done you have a very good starting platform that will work great and be ready for any future mods you want. Hi flow the turbo for $1800, replace the turbo for $2500. You already have an 11mm pump so pump upgrades should be down the list.

Have fun. Every mod gets a grin ;)

You can chip a td42ti as it is electronically contolled.
You could get a gtx 2863 with a bit of change from 2K :)

That's interesting, I have read that before but have not been able to find a chip?? Who does one Ben? Be keen to investigate if you can point me in the right direction.

Yes as Newby states though there is No Plug n Play unit made for the TD42Ti. You'd need to adapt what is on the market. I spoke to the guys at Uni Chip at the 4x4 show a couple of years ago and they looked at me blank!

There was some talk from the mob that offer the $12k upgrade of the inclusion of a performance module in the tuning side in addition to the custom pump and the rest. I think it was referred to as a 'PD'

Is anyone using a TD05 16g large turbo in a touring/towing application?
