View Full Version : Getting a nut inside the chassis rail. Best or easiest way?

On the Gu's and the Q's i think there is four bolts that hold the front steering guard onto the chassis. Each bolt hole has one of those nuts inside the chassis rail. A while back I removed the plastic POS guard and one of the bolts seized and snapped off. I have coming a metal guard maybe tomorrow to replace the plastic one. I drilled the broken bolt, screwed in a ezy out, spray the shit out of the bolt with the freeze spray, would budge. I then heated it up with a blowtorch. No joy. In the end the ezy out snapped off too. So I had to drill that out which in turn the nut inside the chassis came away. bugger.
I thought to slide up the rail through a larger hole towards the bar a new nut with some wire but I reckon that will be a big hit and miss.
The hole is 10mm in diameter and the bolt thread is 6mm I believe. I was thinking of those nutsert thingo's but never seen or used one. If that would work.
So. Whats the best plan of attack now?
Cheers.

Either tack a piece of wire to nut so it inserts into chassis but may spin.
Just got a Rivnut Tool and a grab pack of rivnuts up to M8 or m10, but plenty of M6
Its just sitting here, rivnuts make a job look neat too,
Are you able to drill it to fit the rivnut??

Use the wire trick TD mentions and do the bolts up with a rattle gun.

I just thought of a way. Feed a thin piece of wire into the hole that had the nut there and run it out to the larger hole down the rail. Then tie the wire to a bolt of the right size and pull it back through until the bolt comes out of the hole. Then tack weld the bolt into position from the outside of the rail. So then there will be a bolt hanging out and I can atleast get a nut onto it to secure the plate.
Hehe. Idea's man.
Other than that. What is the diameter of a 6mm threaded rivnut?. I don't really want to drill out the hole if I can. My drill bits are FUBAR. :)

Had a similar problem at the rear of the chassis, there was a threaded hole (nut welded to inside of the chassis) I wanted to use to mount a gas bottle carrier, about 18" or 20" In from the end of the chassis rail. I still don't know what the thread is, was unable to find a bolt to suit, & believe me I tried. Same on both sides of the vehicle. Should be metric fine, but it's not. A mystery. Anyway I ended up doing as others have suggested & welded a slightly smaller nut onto the end of a length of steel rod & bought a bolt to suit. Worked like a charm. Needs a reasonably thick rod to stop it bending when you tighten the nut, think mine was about 5mm.

You will need to drill to 9.5mm for a 6mm rivnut.
Hope that helps
