Hi all just noticed yesterday if I rev the Patrol whilst in "park" the motor produces boost.
It never did this before but thinking it must be because I have the EGR blocked.
Is this normal as now exhaust turns turbo ???
Any ideas

Would it be the same as a manual reving in neutral ? I can get boost when I rev mine, not as high as when driving though

Do You have EGR blocked as well,
Before my mechanic said as it wasn't under load it would be nil boost.
But now the EGR is blocked and as you I get boost not as much as under load [driving]
@ MEH is yours a 3 ltr DI

Same here. I can get very low boost when revving in neutral, maybe 4psi max

Egr not blocked until my Dawes turns up. Have the plate and needle valve already to go.
Yeah 3.0 Di

Must be normal then now that I'm using DAWES etc. Thanks

From my knowledge all 3L do this from stock. We just noticed this on a brand new common rail we got when comparing to my DI.

My best guess is that it assists with speeding up the low RPM boost by already having the waste gate fluttering (at idle)

You have an auto too which places a little bit of load on the motor compared to a manual. I wouldn't worry to much as ironman said to get the best out of such a little motor it needs to be ready to go.

I don't normally rev it as I have no need but was waiting for someone idling and gave it a few taps on the throttle,
Cant see it doing any harm as Patrol is running like a swiss clock Atm lol. Just curious, so thanks to all for your answers

Is it unusual for mine to be doing it?

Are you getting boost at idle Winnie?

I will be installing my boost gauge soon, hopefully in a week. Mine is a manual 3.0Di stock, I will report back if mine produces boost or not in neutral.

No no where near idle, more like 3000rpm when I rev in neutral.

Yeah it's perfectly normal. Performance wise if I could have 5psi even 10 at idle then it would make for a very quick td

Completely usual mate, manual should do the same thing. My GU does :D

Yeah mine is a TD42 that's only why I asked. Thanks matt. Mmmmmmmm boost at 500rpm that would be good! Lmao

Yeh if you're revving it to 3000rpm you might start to see it flutter on a TD42, but boost should come on later so you shouldn't see near what you see on a ZD30.

:P if you were seeing boost at 500, you'd be topped out far too early!

No you should see more!! There are setups out there which can produce near on 30psi by 2000rpm on a td42 and can hold that til nearly 4000rpm. They make for a very drive able and responsive vehicle.

Nothing wrong with making boost at 500rpm (although that is a little low for a TD. Seeing boost at 1000rpm is good though and correct turbo sizing won't see you top out to early.

True! But I'm making the assumption its a stock setup.

Fair enough.

So installed my boost gauge today on a stock 3L Di manual and yes it produced 2psi at 2000rpm and 4psi at 2500rpm. Didn't go any higher but would assume it would keep getting higher.

This is how turbo cars that drag race and hill climb work watch some videos even tractor/ sled pulling they rev up until boost comes on the they get the hole shot launch otherwise they bog down

They usually are in gear though and hold the handbrake on.
