Ok so here's the scenario, my work purchased a 2nd hand generator to test our load bank on that we are currently making,

Here is what it looks like

33016

As you can see its a big shipping container and in that is a diesel motor which I believe is a v12 twin turbo.

Yesterday they ran 2 tests at 500kw on the load bank all good, then as they were running a no load 80kw cool down run this happened

Here are some of the pieces of the carnage

Luckily no one was in there at the time and the sparky and manager who were running it were outside, it blasted a tonne of oil all inside, block has 2 holes and you can see right through as big as my head, from what I heard the head has a massive crack right through it too...

Not good for a piece of machinery that we are lucky to have put 5-10 hours on!

Cheers,
Eric.

Flaming lucky everyone was outside. The oil burns would have been horrific.

It might have been 3x 3.0L put together lol.... As for cost who knows, I don't even know what they paid for it, I heard around the $40k mark as it was going to cost around $30k to hire one and delivery etc, so they went out and bought their own instead, Apparently it was all serviced etc before it arrived, when they were running it fark me did it blow some smoke haha

Yes you got very lucky in the personal health sence .
I filled a slot at a bitumen plant when I was light on for work and they were short handed. Went for a walk through the plant one day to see the supervisor, one very pale looking young bloke and another employee all assessing the mess that had just occurred when a heat exchanges split and sprayed 180deg C bitumen in a 25 foot radius through a myriad of pipes, pumps and valves. The mess took 3 blokes 3 days to clean.
And back to pale young bloke. He was sitting in a control room next to the heat exchanges doing the transfer that caused the mess. When it let go it hit the window he was looking out of. Went from day to night in an instant, he smashed the emergency stop button came out of that room about as fast as the bitumen came out of the heat exchanger. When we inspected the exchanger, it had only split a thread, and the hole was about 1.5mm wide.

An educated guess I reckon it would be close to the 100k mark if they want to replace it with a new donk.

Gen set that size would be worth repairing for $100K get their money back soon enoung,
We sent two that size to a rock concert in Perth with two staff to set up and run, one was only a back up if the other failed
some people have way too much $$$$$

There has to be a wreckers yard for gensets....:smileyvault-cute-bi.... bit of a patch up and it's good to go.......

I too have worked on some of these containers, and designed a emergency fire system for a Cummins Unit or two.....

Can't imagine the sound of that mishap though, it must have been good.....
