Hi all, i currently have a 1992 td42 gq with turbo and front mount. I am also toying with the idea to update to a gu. I have a question for all owners of the 3.0 gu's. When did nissan start to sort their motors out and start making zd30's that didnt blow up. Ive heard a lot of hard luck stories about the early 2000 ones blowing up with relatively low k's. Hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction here.

Looks up nads in the search function. It is believed that 2004 after is the magic number. Look for a good service history then block egr clean carbon deposits boost pyro gauges and see how you go

I have no issues with my mid 2004 model,
I fitted NADS at 180K, now have 196k on the clock

I'll third the above - 2000 to 2003 seem to be the range that has the potential to let go.

G'day Hughey,
I had a GQ4.2D for well over 400K and it was a dream machine. Stacks of grunt down low revs and very simple to work on/maintain.
Now got a 2008 3.0CRD. Lovely machine with no probs. so far but a relative mother to work on and being turbo and smaller cubes, you can't pull on the manual throttle and crawl up a rocky creeks no more. Needs sufficient revs to get the turbo pumping to get the H.P. up and for my money (not that that's much), that's not where I'd prefer to be.
SO, mid 200O's would be the non grenade safe number, add the extras as above and you'll be OK but if you have a good TD42 and you've maintained it well, I'd not change it till it is well and truly R**ted after say 800K.
Happy days

Yeah well i have just recently given the old girl a new lease on life with a full engine rebuild to turbo specs and fitted a t04 (ebay copy) and front mount cooler. So its got plenty of life left in the old girl yet. Another question. I got it dyno tuned just 2 weeks ago and got 126hp @ the wheels. With a standard pump is this fairly good in other td42 owners eyes? I'm wrapped with the improvement dont get me wrong. Cheers

That's good for the standard pump. You'd struggle to pull any more than that out of it.

i have been travelling oz full time for the last 18 months and the amount of travellers that ask me how my 2002 ZD30 is. since doing nads all is good. but the people that have talked to me about their motors blowing are ZD30's that are 2000 to 2004. no one in my travels above 2004 have had any problems apart from bad fuel doing damage.
