Not the best pic but dated from 1913 not 1918 as I thought. I think they called them the butchers bayonet. This one is un sharpened, I believe it to be German in origin, steel is Solinger.
blade is a good 300mm long

Its in good nick for the age, i saved a copy of the bayonet and sheath and see if the guy at work has the book with him tonight and will confirm it.

Latest 1 I picked up;

32682

1949 Belgian Bayonet from the ABL sub machine gun made by Fabrique Nationale

TD, it is a German WW1 Sapper's bayonet with sawback.

Pommel is the stylised eagle which is prominent of german knives of that era. Haven't been able to confirm which rifle it's from but NATO tried to have banned ad it was believed by them that when someone was skewered, it caused more damage which apparently didnt occur as the saw back is similar to what you would find on any normal swiss army blade.

They had that saw backed bayonet on pawn stars and they said it was the engineers that carried it good for barbed wire or something. Worth a few bob too

I've always known it as a German bayonet from 1913, and called the Butchers bayonet but google shows lots of different styles.
Value I have no idea, just an interesting piece from our war torn past.
Also have a bayonet from an AK-47 , I'm not sure how accurate it is I only brought it for its size, but heres some pics of it

threedogs
10th August 2013, 06:08 PM
I'd say so to me its brand new. and never been used that's for sure, but I have over 50 Knives easy maybe 100
haven't counted them,
The AK47 job has blade of maybe 150mm does that sound right, maybe all the WW1 bayonets were too long
for modern weapons
AK47 only cost me $15 I think

threedogs
11th August 2013, 06:21 PM
I thought it was an Eagles head until recently I heard it referred to as a dove head Bayonet,
I'll get a better picture

@ oncedisturbed did a little research and came across a 1910 imperial German butcher bayonet for the KAR98 mauser rifle
with pattern leather scabbard, sound ok to you, I have no idea

oncedisturbed
24th August 2013, 07:05 PM
There are 5 different variants of the bayonet from 33-45 and none with a sawback as it was outlawed in WW1 with the Geneva Convention but they will fit most Mauser Rifles.

http://worldbayonets.com/Bayonet_Identification_Guide/Germany__Post_WW_I_/Germany_1933_1945.html

It appears that the saw back is a bastardised version of this bayonet in which they were taken back and modified to appear like the below but with a shorter blade;

http://worldbayonets.com/Bayonet_Identification_Guide/Germany__Imperial_/B1015_2/B1015-1.html

This is a good sight to try and identify bayonets;

That's great info , now from looking through all those reference pictures and whats on Ebay
I'm yet to see another the same, am I looking in the right places, or did they convert {change}
bayonets in the field.

Edit ::found out its a very rare 1913 bayonet to suit the Gew98 rifle,
but even this one had a tin scabbard not leather like my example.
but the good thing is its very desirable to the collector because its rare

oncedisturbed
25th August 2013, 10:34 PM
Bingo, found it but again no leather scabbard / frog;

http://www.anzacblade.com.au/ww1-german-ks-98-bayonet-scabbard-1913-sawback-p-127.html

Worth some good coin and your's probably more than this thread above due to it's condition and also the fact that is a leather scabbard and not a metal one. Made by E & F HÖRSTER SOLINGEN.

A lot of the one's I have found while researching your's have had an elongated blade which was a more standard format. Still trying to find where the leather scabbard / frog came from.

"IF" the bayonet and scabbard have matching number's, it's worth goes up as well.

I'll post pics of the markings a bit later, that's the one I saw as well. On pawn stars they had one and were told they filed the sawback onto them with a file in the field.
My example has no file marks at all. This bayonet has no connection to my Family, so no family history to check

oncedisturbed
26th August 2013, 07:21 AM

oncedisturbed
26th August 2013, 09:04 AM
I will hunt around for this number 48.R.10.168 which may be the serial type number or a regimental number, top of the blade with crown etc will be the maker's mark

Don't know my dates but would this be from the Boer war ?
I'll wait and see what you come up with

oncedisturbed
26th August 2013, 09:19 AM
Nope, 1st issued in 1913 at the begining of WW1 to either German or Prussian Colonial troops.

1st Boer War 1880-81
2nd Boer War 1899 - 1902

threedogs

more pics of the same
That soldier on guard duty looks like he has a leather scabbard,
But seems strange my leather scabbard survived in the humidity where the leather
grips [handle] didn't,,, Gunk on the blade is only Lanolin

Have got a few more pics to load but MC keeps kicking me out when I try and upload.

The Xtactical ones are a pleasant surprise being an Anaconda make, they are pretty good quality and hold an edge fairly well so far. The most expensive I have recently purchased was the sidekick for $50 but on average nothing has cost more than $30.

Also recently picked up a pigeon pair fixed blade and matching fold back, leatherman sidekick, gerber multi tool, some key chain folding blades as well.

Ordered 13 other various others as well that I am still waiting for about a month now, if they are decent quality, I will be looking at bringing them in on a regular basis in lots of 5-10 depending on interest received with them.

Some are made with 440 stainless steel as well which will be interesting to see

Was going to do fillet knives for Forum members but some how forgot.
I've sent pics of my Bayonet to the Guy in the links for him to make an offer. If I decide to sell it I'll give you first go.
But as you already know its rare so not going to be cheap. got a few leatherman and Buck knives

Hi!

Russian military bayonets don't have sign CCCP or AK-47 like your.
Only serial № on blade, scabbard and handle.

for example

there are official types of bayonets for Kalashnikov

Its my 1913 one that is of interest and very expensive ATM

oncedisturbed

The serial numbers will either be matching with the rifle serial number and / or regimental number or the soldier it was issued to.

Those buck knives look good.
Love the damascus steel kit it looks awesome with the swirls etc.

Just ordered a folding lock back DIY kit from the US earlier as well to try my hand at making 1 then will get a fixed blade kit and then design my own.

I was going to get the shape cut with my Laser bloke, but its not necessary
You will need to heat treat it later to harden it, so you really need it soft to work,
shape drill holes ect, I cut the shape using 5" grinder, Bench grinder and linisher.
A 9" grinder is fine.

If you use trollskyy's idea of the angled block to sharpen the blade you can do most things with a vertical sander.

As we all love pics heres some more::: The grey chefs knife is my first ceramic knife, feels weird cuts great, just don't expect to cut chicken bones with it.
The other is a pic of some blanks I need to finish including my Seki City one at the bottom, the Damascus bar is Alabama ladder patern, which looks like rain drops.
and the knife on its own is yet to be finished, handle is streaky buff horn ,camel bone and burr walnut with a red spacer behind the lot.
I do have a plan for a handle on a full Damascus blank as a skeleton look, I have small dremel die grinders and will remove most handle material so you can see the Damascus through the handle.
Most cut and weld mild steel on for handle end to save Damascus, Thinking camel bone against the black/white of blade

have had no problems to date, when Pig hunting we always left our knives in the 4x4.
I like the horizontal sheaths for folded knives, less visable

Free handed the grind on the linisher at work.. Come up ok.
Am now polishing the blade.
Will use some 8mm ply as the handle, and put some finger groves in it for a little shape..
Blade is 120 long, 4mm L6 steel.
Got some 6mm stainless Rod at home for the pins.

Will need to invest in a belt grinder and furnaces..

@ Growler I found one of those knives with its pouch on the road years ago. great knife.

@ Kallen you'll still need to harden then temper it, 6mm is a bit big for pins, try some 1/8th
bronze rod, you'll also need some CA glue

I'll put pics up of my swords today [3] some are folded steel, which is similar to Damascus
And yes Stropp they are sharp, one is WW2 STD issue, same as this one

Better get all the terms right so we all know what we're talking about, the handle is called scales one each side
normally sold 5" long x 1"1/4 wide x 1/4" thick, camel bone it great to work with as you can even scrimshaw it.
Some great man made procducts, but as I said look around as you can use anything,
I used some red gum from Bunnings for my fillet knife and sheath, once you're hooked there is no going back.

As I said over in the USA they use a 30" x 1" upright belt grinder, the laser cutter is quoting the bits ,.
There is an attatchment to suit a drill press, not that good but ok.
I've found the Black and Decker Finger file the best so far, nice small radius on the nose roller.
Those 36" x 4" linishers are great for doing scales, EG matching bolster to scale.

It will vary in layers from say 176 to 520 layers folded umpteen times..

Katana's are a work of art just like some knives, This Katana is razor sharp, they were master craftsman, but this is whole new topic and very ,very interesting
Folded steel has more layers and they polish to finish it, you NEVER muck around with the finish
on any Japanese sword or touch the blade with your fingers

@ STROPP just looking at your Katana whats missing is a bit of sting ray skin. the small item on the handle is called a menuki or similar.
Some had full stingray on the handle others had cord holding the skin and menuki in place. The Menuki is for grip . I also like the swirls on
the blade like waves or clouds. Maybe you could cover it with cling wrap so you don't lose any more pieces.

@ Kallen when ever you work on a knife once you have the edge on it tape it up or make a universal guard.
Haven't cut myself yet but would think it is very easy to lose a digit. lol

Theres a knife maker in Hahndorf (Sth Aust) that finishes on glass

Dad used to re finish his razor blades on the inside of a glass cup.
Glass is flat and not many use a strop these days, except all my old teachers.
Reckon growler may have copped a few too, sorry mate lol.
Strop removes the burr and polishes it a little IMO

How do you sharpen using a stone??
I was tought figure 8's

i was taught the same but i found in the end i was digging a hole in the middle of my stone. straight forward and backward motions is the trick and make sure you use both edges of the stoneif you understand my meaning

threedogs
22nd December 2013, 12:02 PM
Had a ringer on a bush job years ago who carried a small stone with him and every night he unfolded his buck and did two passes
one forward and one return, all night he would do that. He is like me and try to remove the shoulders so the knife is basically a big wedge, My butcher knives are like this
and bloody sharp as. "cause we all know accidents only happen with dull knives' Doesn't explain why I always cut my self though. lol
Crap steel wont hold an edge and never will. I think 27 degrees is what they say, but 27 degree is found on heaps of things, Baja Claw eg

oncedisturbed
22nd December 2013, 12:19 PM
most blades are edged at roughly 23 degrees, some right down to 15 and even 10 degress but it will depend on whether it is a bevelled edge or accute edge

Stropp, that is an awesome knife.

I have just ordered a new sharpening kit that adjust from 10-27 degress depending on blade type with 400, 800, 1k and 1500 grit stones and a 10k wetstone as well for finishing

Stropp
22nd December 2013, 12:34 PM
Stropp, that is an awesome knife.

Thx Jason, wasn't sure but it certainly looks good and has a reasonable scabbard but it doesn't feel super sharp but that may be because of my cooking knives that I keep very sharp. I should say the front of the blade is not that sharp, from where it curves that is very very sharp.

What C0ckheads its clearly not a flick knife. A flick knife is spring loaded. I would have been asking questions there. We can buy pocket knives here with a nib on the blade to allow for one handed opening. I'd be saying that's close to theft on customs behalf

It will also come under semi assisted via force eg flick of wrist or single handed opening.

Same happened to me with 2 rescue knives with a straight blade because a thumb stud on the blade to allow single handed opening but the rescue knives with a curved blade and a thumb stud was allowed.
