Hi All,
Is the attached video showing excessive play.
You can see Im turning the wheel and the t/shaft is moving, if you get my drift.
Just trying to get to the bottom of some annoying noises in my 03 GU 4.8 auto..
Thanks

thats not excessive play mate that would be about right but if you wanted to adjust it you can take the tailshaft off and there should be a nut on the inside of where the tailshaft connects, if you tighten this nut the pinion will get pushed into the crown wheel but over doing it WILL cause excessive wear on your crown and pinion gears in your diff

What sorts of noises are you getting? Going by the video it looks fine. The movement you're getting is what's called backlash, which is the gap between the crown wheel and pinion. If this gap is too small, you will get excessive wear and short life out of your gears, too much and you will loose teeth and again have short life of the gears. But yours is fine.

It doesn't look too bad to me Shaun, as there will always be a little bit of backlash with the meshing of the gears...

Thanks guys, When shifting from R to D theres a huge delay in engaging and it seems as though it takes up slack 3 times(hard to explain)

Not sure on the patrol ones but when I had a auto commonhore you could adjust the bands around the selector drum this fixing the delay in gear selection
