Hi guys
I have a 2.8TD 98 GU. It stopped yesterday after blowing a lot of smoke and will not start now. I have checked the timing belt for damage, none. This was only replaced 2 months ago. Checked MAF all good. It wants to start but just wont turn over. so I hooked up another battery, it started but ran very rough, revs went up and down the car shook and had a lot of whitish smoke blow out the end. There are no visible signs of anything leaking or busting. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

just grabbed the following from a web site hope it helps
White smoke occurs when raw diesel comes through the exhaust completely intact and unburned. Some causes of this include
•Faulty or damaged injectors
•Incorrect injection timing (could be a worn timing gear or damaged crankshaft keyway).
•Low cylinder compression (eg caused by leaking or broken valves, piston ring sticking, cylinder and/or ring wear, or cylinder glaze)

When white smoke occurs at cold start, and then disappears as the engine warms up, the most common causes are fouling deposits around piston rings and/or cylinder glazing. Use of our Flushing Oil Concentrate and FTC Decarbonizer address these respective problems.

Water entering combustion spaces will also create white smoke. Faulty head gaskets and cracked cylinder heads or blocks are a common cause of water entry, and are often to blame. Unfortunately, expensive mechanical repair is the only proper solution here.
Not an expert but maybe the timing belt has managed to slip seeing as its not long been changed

G'day big bird man
so it was all ultra smooth one day and this state of cactus the next start?
Totally dumb question. Did you visit a servo between good start/bad start? Don't really want to admit it but I found a full load of petrol briefly gave those symptoms then death. Matybe a partial would give what you've got. Hope it's something else but if not it's not the end of the world.
Good luck

Thanks Guys, I guess I'll check timing system next and make sure it hasn't slipped. Col.T no fuel was added in that time. It has 3/4 of a tank in it.

Good news guys, the troll is alive again! Finally being with my tools, I was able to turn and line up timing marks on the 2 top pulleys with the engine marks to find that the fuel pump pulley was out by 1 tooth. So after loosening the tension pulley and moving the fuel pump pulley 1 tooth turn she fired first go. After taking her for run, all good. No smoke, no splutter, just growling like a troll. Hope this is of some help to someone.

Mate. no idea why or how. The tension pulley was secure still, however just to be sure once I fixed the problem I put a new spring on the tension pulley and put some Loc Tite on the pivotal bolt of this pulley. If anyone has any ideas on why this can happen, I'm all ears.
