View Full Version : HID's in my ol' IPF800's

Now I have seen many sites selling HID kits to suit the 800's as they need a different globe to fit. I was going to get the 100W kit with external ballasts but having just ordered some new headlights which will have HID's fitted in them also I don't know how much room I'll have for four ballast in the engine bay.
So would the 75W versions that have internal ballasts be o.k? Or where would be the best place to mount four ballast? Behind the grill but they will cop a bit of chit being there I reckon.

Cheers.

The Ballasts are fully sealed and you can mount them anywhere.

Looking at converting some IPFs too. I have stripped mine and they have the right angle globe. My research is telling me that you can fit a slim ballast and normal globe inside but it's tight. You can get the right angle globes but they are double the price.....

If you do it post up mate, I have not made the decision yet. I have the light in the shed. Going to g 100w hid.

From my findings the ballast to suit the 100watters is too big. The ballast for the 75's will just fit. There's kits on Fleabay for around $150 for 100W and the shorter globes for the 800's. I'm just trying to work out in my head where to mount four ballast if I go the 100's...Make up a plate and mount them all together, or two left and two on the right behind the grill??

I converted a cheap pair of IPF900's i bought on ebay to HID.
Don't know what the GU is like but on my GQ I screwed the ballasts to the radiator support panel just behind the grille. Easy as you like.
Mine were only 35W units but are bloody good especially in combination with the IPF reflector and lens which are excellent.

all I could say on this is the hid spotties are great but I recommend the colour either 4300 or 5000k I have 6000 k in mine and I feel they are to white so ill be changing down to 4300k.

75 watt are available in slimline.
My DL are 100watt HID AC.
My headlights are 75 watt HID, 5000K,
as kevin suggests any thing higher is too blue
H4, H1 what are those right angle jobs called

Mark, just be aware that even with my 35W lights I get MASSIVE reflection from road signs.
Having experienced that, I would be reluctant to go as high as 100 or 75W. I wouldn't install anything more than 55W max if it were me doing it. I feel it would create more problems than it solves.

Please be considerate of other drivers and aim your headlights down after fitting HID. I do a lot of night driving and I'm tired of being blinded by inconsiderate pricks who have illegally fitted super bright HID's to their headlights and not aimed them down - EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.

For sure but this is a discussion about converting driving lights to HID and they should only be on with high beam anyway.

Agree entirely- a bloody lot of annoying reflection from any road sign from my 35 watt conversion in standard IPF's that Nissan install.. Thinking of adding additional set of halogen lights for normal road use and keep HID's for off road/beach use only.

With projectors fitted to mate I forgot to add. So they are legal and will work as they should....
I think I might just go the 75W and see how they work...

Last I knew it was illegal to retro fit HID headlights to a vehicle that did not come from the factory with them fitted. For HID headlights to be legal they need to be factory fitted, self levelling and have headlight washers.
As long as they don't blind other road users I have no problem with them, factory fitted or otherwise.

The lights I'm getting will have the projectors fitted and leveled by the guy who's doing them. I don't know much about the process of doing it but he said he has made up a jig especially for the GU Patrols to get the level right. He also sells them in kit form to do yourself but he said its next to impossible to get the levels right without this jig he's made. I have spoken to plenty who have these exact lights fitted and they all said they are perfect and don't just shine light everywhere like a standard light with a HID fitted would.

They are not legal but they should be. If you ever got pulled up I'm sure you could show the cop the projectors and he's be happy with it. Exactly the same as the HIDs that come in new cars.

Anyhow I have decided on 75w HID's for my 800's with internal ballasts. Will be interesting to see how they go as even though now I have 130w h3 globes in them, they become redundant once I turn on the light bar. There is obviously better spotties out on the market now but the old IPF's look old so no one will want to pinch them. :)

Did you go 6000k or 4500k? I will be going 4500k

The colour is what you need to be aware of,,,, 4500 to-5000 k is heaps, I had 20,000k in at one time and anyone in front just stopped and pulled over.
plus you don't want that blue look which begins around 6000k . I only have 5000k now but 100watt ac

the problem with the 6000k is they are to white which is what is reflecting off the signs but properly adjusted they are not to bad. with the globes just do yourself a favour and go the 4500k. and as far hid headlights go they are all crap even factory ones when they go over hills or speed humps they zap you in the eyes get rid of them all I say.

I have gone back to narva intense globes 55 w so if pulled over I have ADR approved headlights, I also found that the 90 w halogen sucked too much juice when winching at night. i wish there was a retro hid kit that was approved, i put my hi/ lo hid kit in a set of ipf's so i can have extra hi/ lo driving lights.

Why not run the headlights through a relay, that's what ARB and Piranha sell as an after market kit.
Cheap to do yourself and twice the light, worth a thought,

I put an uprated loom in when I went from hid to halogen globes don't know if it made much of a difference but its a 4 mm cable so it should
