Hi all. I've only just bought my first patrol, had a few other 4x4's in the past. It's a1996 Ti with the factory locker. I took it out on the tracks today for the first time and I have to say it was by far the best off roader I've had. The only thing I can fault is the factory locker is very slow to engage and disengage. I had to drive for about 200 meters before the light turned on or off. Is this normal or do I have a problem? Thanks for your help patrolers!

Vacuum operated, and it can take a little while to engage ..... can't remember 200 Metres though.

It should engage faster than that, if the locker hasn't had much use the vacuum solenoids under the bonnet may not be working properly. Disengagement should also happen a bit faster but is dependent on any wind up or load on the axles being removed. Turning left and right as you drive slowly will usually unload any wind up within about 20 meters.

Locking in it can take a while but if there isn't enough vacuum in the system like if you have been accelerating, i usually give the motor a stab in neutral and it helps it engage. Disengaging i usually stop and it unlocks.

I "think" its on the passenger side on the firewall, I don't have any photos but its a black box with some hoses in and out of it. but I could be wrong.

Is this what you mean, I thought that this was a part of the LPG System?

When I went to the Tip in 83 the 4x4 we were in had vacuum diff locks, When I did Gunshot the owner taking video asked why I was reversing the 4x4.
I told him the light for locker hadn't come on. He told me locker engages straight away it just takes longer for light to come on, hope this helps.
Easy enough to test, Locker I think was McNamara, vehicle was a 2door Range Rover

I don't know that I would trust that method.
McNamara locker is what they use in the back of the Falcon RTV ute also.
