Plenty of info on 4.2 mods here.
Seem going big turbo and intercoolers are where monies are spent on these.
Have a search.
As for the chip, I don't think I remember anyone having one on a 4.2.

4.2 is mechanical fuel injected . No computer . Chip can only be used on common rail injection . Big exhaust , intercooler and boost !!

and Direct injection, as long as you have an ECU it can be chipped, plenty of guys here with TD 4.2 that boggie

Time for an exhaust upgrade, and a tune for Stage1 upgrade.

Bigger Turbo, reset injectors and re-tune for Stage2......

Intercooler and re-tune for Stage3.......

No chip for the 4.2L, but if you are only after mild gains, then an exhaust will be around $800 - $1100, and then a dyno and retune will be cheaper than a chip anyway.

You can certainly chip a 4.2. The later models that came factory inter cooled have electronic control of timing while still retaing the same style injector pump. There is a small module on the lower side of the pump.

However there are no plug and play items suitable and the only one that would be suitable is a unichip. You will need a very competent tuner to do this as it has to be wired in and tune from scratch.

Yes it can be expensive. Outcome is being able to control timing which can help with with power and torque. With a 4.2 far bigger gains can be had with turbo,inter cooler and injector pump upgrades. A unichip compliments something modified better than just putting it on a factory car.
