View Full Version : Identifying a diff.

G'day all. A while ago, I picked up what I thought was an open rear diff for $50, to fit as a temporary diff, so I could repair the one that was diagnosed incorrectly as being cactus, because of a clanging noise. I was told the $50 would fit, but found that the rear axles were to large. I then bought a GU LSD from the wreckers and fitted it. The noise was still present and turned out to be the transfer case. :furious: I was thinking of converting the cheap diff to a locker. It has a step inside to fit the smaller front axles. Is a 35:8 ratio After buying it, on closer inspection, I found it also has a barrel shaped piece which fits between the ends of the axle, and I think it would act as some type of auto locker.

The numbers on the crown wheel are: 35:8 CB 3 10 8

The casing is stamped 5 and 1989 OD And has a 398 cast into it.

There is also 5XX something, something 2 something, painted near the pinion end. And I found the words 94 Pathfinder under the dust and crap.

My question is, will it fit the front end, while I convert my existing front diff to an air or electric locker, or is it not advisable?

Of it is the rear of a pathfinder with an LSD in it then they sold you the wrong one for the back of your car. But! If it has an LSD then happy days! I understand that pathfinder diff centre will go straight in the front of a GQ and give you an LSD in the front! Happy days.

very interesting, I've no idea, you'll need Matt and MR maybe.
possible to put a pic?? How is it length wise,???

All I can say is that it's not a GQ/GU LSD, and that it fits straight into the rear, except for the axles. Will try and upload pics, but won't hold my breath, as I am still a Newb at puters.

If it fits the rear it will fit the front, just rotate it 180 so what was the bottom is now the top.

Count the teeth in the axels fit, if it is 31 spline the cv's should slide in if the hole is the right diameter.

32136 This is the $50 diff.

32137 The one on the right is the original LSD with a GU flange just fitted loosely. It is just my spare, now.

32138 The barrel shaped device which sits inside the two axles.

The two diffs are approximately the same length.

One problem is that the $50 diff was un covered and left in a dusty shed, before I got it. I need to wash it all out. If it is the right diff to fit, I will have to take it to a workshop with a wash trough.

If the $50 diff you got IS out of a 1994 (WD21) Pathfinder then it should be a H223b 31 spline and most likely LSD, unless it came out of a import Terrano most of which had open centre 4 pinion diff. GQ coil spring diffs (H223b) had 31 spline front and 33 spline rear, so you may just have the elusive front LSD that so many people want. If you want to fit the front LSD you will need to fit it into your original high pinion centre, not the low pinion centre out of the Pathfinder.
35:8 is the ratio, 35 teeth on the crown wheel and 8 teeth on the pinion.

35 / 8 = 4.375 diff ratio.

That is great news. Looking at the pics, it is a just a smaller version of the rear LSD, so I will probably wait until I revamp the whole front axle to fit it. If I have to use the original diff housing, then I will have to find someone who knows how to set up a diff properly and that is going to be a challenge in this neck of the woods.

Being 4.3 can MN just swap his gears from original (4.1) diff to New lsd one?

Looks like I'll have to go into hiding and put a deadly mantrap on the Old Trol.

Yes he can.

I will crawl under and have a look at the housing. From memory, the bloke I bought it off was adamant that it came out of a patrol, so hopefully it has already been transferred across to the right housing.

The GQ uses H233b diff front and back (plus some have the bigger diff)

The diffeance between the front and back is the spline count - this mans that a front axel wont fit a diff from the rear of a gq.

Some model of the path finders have the same spline count h233 fitted to the rear.

The MK patrol rear diff (h233b) is supposed to have the same spline count as the GQ front H233. Im about to try a MK LSD in the front of my GQ.

Have you considered going to a GU ft. axle and getting the bigger CV's and Brakes as well?, LSD in the GQ ft. is going to test out the CV's otherwise. I have 4 here if you break any.

No, I haven't considered that, but I am guessing it should be right, as my Old Trol is only a stock, carby RB30, and there isn't a lot of horsepower there to wreck the CV's.

How did you go with this endeavour GQ Tank? Tomorrow I am going to look at an MK/Q which is sitting in a paddock. How do I tell if it is fitted with a
H233B?

It will look the same as yours ;) the other diff is the H260 which is markedly bigger. if they are both the same front and back on the car you inspect then likely they will be the H233.

The best part about this upgrade for the average punter has to be Hands Down the Upgrade of the Brakes OMG!!! Mudnut! Insane upgrade. was worth it for this alone!

I would love to whack a GU Front axle to handle the LSD, but then I would need to do the tie rod and draglink, and upgrade to 16" rims and tyres to fit. I just don't have the dollars to do it all. The old trol I am looking at has had the front running gear ripped out, so I wont be able to compare. I will get the numbers from under the bonnet. There are couple of old Mk/Qs that were for sale before I bought the GQ. I will make it my mission to get some pics and find out if they are still for sale.

The wheels you need to run depends on the offset, I can run my 15 inch rims with clearance to the brake's. I also run 16 inch with a gu offset for my street tyre. The steering isn't that hard too overcome.

I had a look at the MK/Q. It is basically a pile of rusty panels with the rear diff in there, somewhere. He has a shorty that has a bit of rust, no engine, but it looks as it has had a suspension lift, it has a body lift and a dedicated gas system. It was registered, engineered with a 5ltre v8. It would be a fantastic project. unfortunately he was offered $800 dollars, but the bloke hasn't turned up to claim his prize. The owner has no idea what the diff would be worth. I reckon he should get a bit more than $800 for the shorty, because of the ability to whack a 5 litre into it. Any thoughts?
