Hi guys,

Well I have intro'ed myself already, so here it goes.

We're looking at a nice Patrol that has everything we want.

Now the problem is, both me & my partner don't know much about 4x4 cars and off roading, so what do we really need to look at so we don't buy a lemon but instead buy a nice comfortable & reliable car that we can take off-road here & there. Not to the extremes like some of you guys here, but still some nice hills/rivers etc.

Here are the specs:

Vehicle 2007 NISSAN PATROL GU 5 MY07 ST
Price $29,888 *
Kilometres 109,597
Body 4 door 7 seat WAGON
Colour Burnt Silver
Transmission 4 speed Automatic
Engine 4 cylinder Diesel Intercooled Turbo
Reg Plate CMX56L
Reg Expiry 2013-10-30
VIN JN1TESY61A0398607

From the photos, it looks in very very good condition. It had all the services done with logbooks. When I spoke to the dealer he told me honestly that the dash shows bubbles (apparently common with these cars??) and that it had been replaced by Nissan Australia.

Please let me know what you think, and if this is a good/bad buy and what I need to look out for.

Thanks so much for your help!!

So they replaced the dash and the new dash is bubbling too? Get them to replace it before sale! It is common in those cars and although Nissan don't want to know about it they are obligated to fix it mate.

It's just been replaced already. It came back last week from Nissan, so the dash is brand-spanking new :)

If you don't know anyone to check the car over for you, the best thing you could do would be to arrange a local 4wd specialist to do a pre purchase inspection. (Forget such inspections by the likes of RAC). Around $120 to $150 spent on an inspection is well worthwhile. It offers peace of mind, & can potentially save you a heap of money in repairs, as well as giving you some extra bargaining points. In my case it saved me around $4000 on the selling price & repairs made by the seller before purchase.

I found an independent specialist close to the car yard I bought from, & the car yard dropped it off for the inspection. (I live 150kms from the car yard).

If a seller is not happy for such an inspection to be done......walk away.

cuppa's right, do a pre purchase inspection. I have a mate that did one when purchasing a gasp to say this but a Toyota and they did all sorts of things like engine compression test, checking all suspension components, inspection of brakes, wheel bearings, revs check, and many more. worth the money as he ended up not buying due to number 3 low on compression and water in diff.
