Just thought I would post stuff I found out about the Patrol.

My Patrol already has the front diffs and gearbox breathers done into the front guard.

I was told the rear diff breather is that high I would be floating down the river before the breather was under water.

My mechanic is happy to run it up into the front guard if I want but he thinks there is no need. Told me he will do it next time he's working on it, will take him 2secs.

Was going to get all breathers into the snorkel but was told I was going to create fail points for the snorkel. I was told the silicon may unseal and create water entry points which you really don't want.

Often when you enter a water crossing , the front of the car does a "nose dive" into the water, this can bring the water level over the bonnet, even though the water may only be up to the top of the tyres, also if your water crossing is muddy, you can get stuck nose first submerged waiting for a recovery.

The factory breathers are open with no filters, extending them lets you put filters on ,when driving, your diffs can get VERY hot, remember, when your hot diff hits the cold water (even tho you should let diffs cool before entering), the air inside the diff will rapidly contract as its cooled, this effect creates suction, and water may be drawn through a open breather pipe.

You still have your rear diff breather to do anyway, as it is at chassis level, it takes little effort to extend the breathers already in the gaurd to the firewall as well, (or snorkel as you suggest) this gives them a little more height, puts them further back from the front of the car (RE:first paragraph)

You "may" not ever need em, and you may never know when they save your diffs/auto/transfer, but i can tell you these things don't like water inside (especially auto gearboxes) , for the small effort and tiny cost, why take the risk of stuff crapping itself far from home ?

I extended the front ,didn't need to and brought the rear into the engine bay behind the IC on the firewall.
Used 6mm push fitting

After having my hole gearbox out and having reduction gears a new stronger 5th and clutch put in I will now (today) be extending them up under my bonnet.. The gearbox guys found there to have been excessive water in both gearbox and transfer witch resulted in warn synchros...

So if I was you I would do it asap.. I have done my diffs and they are in great order with no water ingested at all..

Yes all mine have been redirected to the back of the fire wall just below bonnet in the engine bay.

If your mechanic thinks the back one is high enough to float the car he has not done a decent water crossing. You don't need to get them up into the snorkel it you do need to get then out of the front guard.

Given that from factory the air intake for the engine is beside the diff breather in the front guard and we lift that up out of the way, common sense would tell us that the diff breathers should be moved too ;)

Ask around fellow 4wders for their "High tide Mark" I've seen some halfway up the rear window. Got through everything was wet
But sometimes you just cant control the situation at hand

Yep true, ive walked dirty water crossings 3 or 4 times, sussing out exactly where i think my wheels will go, this is not fail safe, you can still drop a wheel into a deep hole half way across you did not know about.

Better have 'em and not need 'em I say. It's such small in-expensive job to extend them further, it's a no brainer really.
