View Full Version : 3.0 CRD EGR Block, Dawes & Catch Can

Could anyone tell me specifically if my 2010 patrol would benefit from an EGR block. From all that I've read in this forum, I'm guessing the answer is yes, but what about a Dawes Valve to restrict over boost and a catch can?
Reason I ask is that I've noticed boost often getting up to 20-22psi when cruising 110kph and the Turbo fairly rattles until it rapidly drops to 10psi before it climbs back again. There is a corresponding increase/decrease in EGT to about 700deg C.
Also when I was fitting the EGT Gauge, there was a significant amount of oil in the intake - like if I wiped my finger around the pipe, the oil would drip from my finger. The guys at Nissan said "Don't worry about, it's normal for these engines.

A catch can will "catch" all that oil, and not foul your Maf,
Any motor will benefit from EGR block,
Maybe remove and clean your IC ,spray the MAF and re-install when all dry.
Oil dripping from your finger is never "normal"
Dawes will allow you to control your boost, but 700 seems a bit high

quite strange that sort of boost on a crd without being blocked you have some issue somewhere I would start with a crc maf sensor cleaner clean that up definitely put a catch can on but I would not block the egr till you have this boost issue fixed as I believe blocking egr would cause overboost from what you are describing

I look at it like this and someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Blocking the egt stops hot exhaust gasses entering the intake ok.... The reason people do this is because it burns the oil in the intake and clogs up the intake with carbon and sludge. However oil shouldn't be in the intake in the first place.... So if you were to put a catch can in the breather line stoping oil from going into the intake system from the breather there's no real reason to block the egt.. And then no need for the boost control valve.... I think alot of the time faulty turbos pumping oil through the intake have more blame than the EGR system

There will still be a soot build up due to the egt (exhaust gas reticulation), the same as there is a build up in exhaust pipes.
I do agree though that the amount of soot build up would be substantially less if oil wasn't present.

Yeah true but all modern engines are designed to have the EGR system there but not the oil. So the best bet is just to sort the oil problem first. Even if the exhaust gas dosent burn the oil in the intake it's still going to carbon up round the valves and pistons eventually. When the first 1kdftv Toyota engines came out years ago I remember pulling a intake and I couldn't get two fingers down there :p and the was right and the start on the intake manifold. I've noticed over the following years this still happens to 90% of them with or without EGR coolers also.

Instal the Dawes first before blocking the EGR. Then block your EGR and Catch can. Problems will disappear then. If you block the EGR first your boost levels may fluctuate a lot more. So, Dawes and needle valve, then EGR and Catch can. Well the catch can can go in anytime...
