View Full Version : Rear body mount bolts

Hi all
I've done a search on this and it gave me a few good ideas on how to remove the rear body mount bolts. I especially liked the idea of using some square tube down the hole onto the captive nut to stop it spinning, but does the retainer looking bit need to be removed first in order to gain access to the captive nut? How is it removed?
I'm all ears for tips and advice on how to remove the rear bolts as they are just spinning, despite using inox on them several times for a month before hand.
Thanks all
Andy

Got one out and struggled with the other one. Have butchered the hole now and it's still not out.:( not happy.
Is there any reason why nissan have put the bolts upside down with a captive nut on it? Any reason why I can't just drop the bolt in from the top and put a nut on the bottom?( after removing the retainer and nut)

Hey Parksy. I just removed the body lift from my car on Sunday so I know what you're talking about. When the previous owner put the body lift in he drilled out the captive nuts. I put the bolts in through the top no dramas at all.

Thanks Winnie, much appreciated. Will be installing the bolts from the top now.:)
Edit: forgot to ask, does opening the access hole to the captive nut weaken the structure in any way?

Doubt it, mine were hacked open to do the body lift about 7 years ago and no sign of anything cracking because if it

When you say you drilled through it, do you mean you drilled through the captive nut and installed the bolt through the captive nut?

Yea sorry mate. Yes, drilled it to 12.5 and used 12mm 8.8 zinc coated bolts.

Removed the bolts, ended up drilling down the center from the top with a small drill bit followed by a large drill bit. Was able to undo the bolt easily after this. Mine weren't rusted at all, but these bolts were installed with loctite. Removed the captive nuts and retainers completely. Replaced all the bolts with 1/2" high tensile bolts. Here's a comparison pics of the old vs new mounts.

Are the new mounts just standards? looks like a bit of difference compared to the old

Yes they are oe nissan mounts. Old ones were no good. I would get clunking noises going over bumps, especially when they were wet.
The new mounts have taken the harshness out of bumps aswell. Happy days.:)

I just paid more attention to the pic, you probably should of used high tensile washers and not standard zinc washers. Not sure if it really matters but I would've gone high tensile.
Did you replace all the bolts with high tensile???

I didn't replace the front 2 bolts, simply because the shop I visited only had 8 bolts and not 10.
When they get some more stock ill do the change. I used half inch bolts, so being imperial uses a different grade system to the metric system when it comes to tensile strength. These are grade 5, which is equivalent to 8.8 in the metric scale. I didn't think much about the washers. But now that you've mentioned it I might keep an eye out on some high tensile ones just for peace of mind.

Don't be to concerned about the washers, your compressing rubber so you won't get tensile torque applied anyway..
But yea those old mounts are stuffed.. The noises you are getting would probably be because the mounts were stuffed, the bolts would have been loose..
But all good. Nice and New..

Good point westy, zinc plated steel vs rubber... So long as the bolt doesn't stretch I suppose I'm all good.:)
