View Full Version : My GU

Thought I might start a thread on my GU. It's my first time owning a 4WD, decided it was time to sell off the fast cars and get out and saw some of our great country with the family in tow!

Swapped the missus' old car (2006 Territory) for this at a local stealership - pretty sure I got the better end of that deal. Word of advice DO NOT buy a Territory. Ever.

I drove it around for a few months as a stocker - and in the process began getting disheartened with the whole 4WD caper - as the Patrol was a gutless slug, and just a sad, boring car to drive.

I cracked the shits last weekend and did the following:

Plugs & Leads
Valve clearances
Did the timing
Cleaned the MAF
New o2 sensor
New oil and filters
and did the resistor mod for the transmission.

This pretty much transformed the car. It's 10 times better to drive now. Which is probably a given - seeing as the timing was set to 3 degrees BTDC, and the valve clearances were almost 1mm :1087:

So far I've done a few mods to it (progress is slow due to lack of funds - but I'm getting there):

Front recovery points
Self-fitted Snorkel
Tough Dog RTC Damper
15" Black Pro-Comps with 35" Micky Thompson's - picked up the wheels and tyres for $500 ;)
Homemade rear worklight holder / spare wheel spacer
Removed the standard alloy side steps - planning to build some rock sliders
Painted the factory alloy bar - going to get a winch plate and bolt a winch in behind this.
Tinted windows
A-pillar mounted Carling switches for winch, spotties, roof light bar (yet to purchase), and rear work lights.

Next round of mods is a 2" lift (as the one in it has pretty much sagged back to stock), and a new head unit / GPS, as the current one is knackered.

After that I'll look at getting a roof rack, LED light bar, new spotties (as the IPF's on it are full of rust/speed holes) and start thinking about building a rear bar + wheel / jerrycan carriers for it.

I'd also like to get a matching set of 33" muddies for it, but the cheapo 35's will do for now, anyway on with the pics!

3M undercoat and a couple of cans of Satin Black, came up pretty good I reckon.

Nah, for the auto I just went down to the local JayCar and bought a .40cent resistor. Seems to have woken it up a fair bit.

Still drinks like a fish though (close enough to 30ltr per 100km...)

Hey Neet,

Nice truck! Did you take the bar off to paint it or do it in situ?

I'd also be keen to see the switches on the a pillar next time you've got the camera out.

Top work.

Having been a ford man i'm sad at the experience but we're all patrol brothers now!

Cheers for the comments guys. Progress will be slow, but I'll get there in the end!

I was also a Ford man ( BA Turbo was the car alluded to in the first post). I have one of these (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GU-Y61-ARB-Rocker-Switch-Pillar-Pod-Diff-Lock-Driving-Lights-Reverse-Painted-K-/281033175709?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item416ee1f29d) full of Carling switches.

As for the bullbar, I painted it in situ, couple of tricky spots to get too, but I'm confident that I have it 99.99% covered.

can you keep this tires on without a lift kit ?

Been a while since I visited it seems!

I have -22 offset wheels, so I only really see rubbing on the inside of the rear wheel flare. A 2" lift would be all you'd need to run 35's everywhere without scrubbing I reckon (provided you had -22 offset wheels)

I've made a few changes to the truck since then.

Voltage displays under the subtank switch.
Dual USB plugs in the back of the centre console to keep the kids iPads on the go.
Rear barn door, and under bonnet lighting care of some 5050 LED strip.
A pair of 12v sockets ( and a fuse box) in the rear for the fridge, etc.
Modified Dual battery system, not perfect yet. Going to get a 3ltr or 4.2ltr airbox for this so I can run the second battery in the normal place (stupid ABS).
Repainted the bar in a gloss black, as the satin was starting to look quite sad.
Currently in the process of getting my arse into gear and making up a winch plate.

Ohh, and I got myself a new set of 35" BFG KM2's last week. MTZ's were quite bald by the time they were retired!

Depending on how the winch plate idea turns out, I'll either get the front bar powder coated, or I'll source a factory winch bar.

I've also experienced the fabled 'factory alloy falling off the car' that so many of us have come to know and love. At 110km/h no less :furious:

So we had a crack at a winch plate over the last day or so, I think it came up really well. Unfortunately my rum intake exceeded my photo taking rate, and as such a large portion of the build was not photographed.

Here she is stripped down to her undies:

And here it is test fitting the base plate:

To the front of this plate we added and additional plate that wrapped around the front of the base plate. To this we added gussets top and bottom, and then bolted the fairlead onto the front of it.

And the finished product:

My winch has been sitting around since June, so it was great to finally get it on the car.

I'm using a Carling switch as an Isolator at the moment. I'll be getting a twist lock one, similar to the one below just for additional peace of mind.
