I've had my GQ Y60 4.2 EFI petrol from new in 1996.....I got to thinking, is it possible that there is a risk of water build up in the petrol tank over the years and how do I eliminate it ?.........is there a commercial product that eliminates water or do I use methylated spirits (as someone suggested),if so how much do I put in the tank and what ratio is optimum ?
Also should the fuel tank be replaced because of it's age (17 years old ?).

Thanks.

I had my tank out of my 92 gq patrol to treat it externally and internally. Before I did this I ran premium fuel as well as fuel system cleaner. When i inspected the internals of the tank, it was immaculate, so I didn't touch it internally and just gave the outside the attention.
Products like fuel doctor and upper cylinder lube apparently disperse water in the fuel tanks. I always add some before I fill up.
If you want to inspect it, pull up the carpet out of the cargo section, remove the fuel access panel, and remove the fuel pump/sender unit. Use a torch and a mirror to inspect the internals.

Pull the rear carpet up and lift the fuel pickup out. Shine a torch in the tank and if you have water you will see it in the bottom of the tank. If there is a little bit you'll see oil in water type beads, if there is a lot you'll see 2 layers.

your far too sensible kallen lol. some people like to live on the edge.

its not too hard to empty the tank out anyway if you are worried about extra crap in the tank? but i wouldnt introduce anything other than petrol into the tank, petrol is a pretty good cleaning product anyway!

Use a waterproof torch if possible, and don't flick it on and off in close vicinity of the tank. Best to be safe then sorry.
