G'day all,

Hope someone can point me in the right direction. I have a GU1 ST Wagon with TD42T. every time I get under about 1000 rpm I get this horrid rattling sound which seems to come from the whole car...

I've checked bolts, screws, connections all over but cannot figure it out.

it's had a single mass fly wheel installed with the new clutch... and I can't pinpoint it's source...

Frustrated...

Is it a rattle or more of a growl?

Yeah without hearing it and by what you have described they all make it. Its hard to be 100% without hearing it.

Bearing in mind what NN said about not being 100% certain without hearing it, the 4.2's do have what some describe as a 'growling' and what I would describe as a 'loud shuddering' when under load at low revs, disappears as soon as the revs rise. When I was buying mine an RACV pre purchase test paid for by the car yard reckoned there was something wrong with the gearbox. A second inspection by a 4wd transmission specialist pronounced it in good condition & the noise normal. I used to find it quite irritating but have grown accustomed to it. 'Nissan character'! :)

why would you be driving it under 1000rpm to much labouring.

Yea mine does it too, I'm still not convinced mine is normal! First cars ive owned that has made this noise! But yea, disappears when revs get to about 1100 - 1200 rpm

All the 4.2's do it.

The 4.2's have a harmonic frequency vibration through the driveline at low revs - never used to worry me too much, but haven't had a 4.2 for a long time and you sort of forget what it is like....

Agree with previous comments. All manuals do it even from new (not as loud of course). The service manager at Nissan Caboolture- bloody good and very knowledgeable bloke on 4.2 diesels told me about the growl in the box when I bought my new ute in 2006. He also said it would get worse with age- and he was right. I think he said it was the way the gears were cut and as they are so strong and reliable, I for one, am prepared to put up with it. My son's GQ ute with a lot more klm's is the same.

Only happens at slow speed usually in 1st when crawling at under 1000 rpm and disappears quickly.

Just out of interest, does anyone know if the 'growl' is audible outside the vehicle? Can't say I ever noticed it on another Patrol.

Not as noticeable from the outside, as it is often masked by tyre noise, as well as engine noise.
