Hey guys. So got an issue that i wasnt too worried about to start with as I thought it might just be condensation but its starting to worry me a little now. When I start the patrol there seems to be water spraying out the exhaust and it also shoots some black stuff onto the driveway but it clears up once it is warm. Im expecting the answer to be the head but really really hoping someone will suggest something not so serious with these symptoms.A bit of wishfull thinking! It had a new head put on it before i bought it so maybe 12 months ago or more. Cheers all.

I'D say condensation very common on petrol motors, maybe more pronounced
now cold weather is here. Are you losing water ????

hard to say if i'm losing water. I dont think so though. It only comes out of the garage on the odd weekend I get a chance to head out bush which makes monitoring these things difficult. The old girl is too expensive to run any other time.
Any ideas what the black shit coming out on startup could be. I was starting to think it could related.

Hi mate,
Could be crack in the head or head gasket leaking from water jacket into cylinder. Obviously that's the water, the black could be carbon deposits in the cylinder/on the plug/valves coming out with the water.
I hope this may help.
Cheers

G'day
not much good with the petrol motors but I'd reckon first hope is just cold weather condensation with a bit of sooty sh@t from the muffler.
Water level should give an idea if it's really leaking through a cracked head etc..
Any water in the oil? may need to do a change to check but I seem to remember that can happen with splits in heads.
You'd have to be bloody stiff to do a head in 12 Mths. I'd have thought. Assume gaskets are good and the whole job was torqued up correctly.
Good luck

G`day mate
If your losing coolant it will smell and your temp should be higher than normal
If it`s condensation which is very common on cold mornings you have nothing to worry about
Condensation will cause the black soot as my roller door can attest to. 20years of condensation and soot has left a little bit of evidence.
If unsure get a professional to check it out.

Mate I have a skyline which does the same thing. The coolant level doesn't move and runs fine, so all seems good to me, unless there are any major signs I wouldn't worry.

Hi jamied,
My old Ford did exactly the same for over 100k and never missed a beat, not so obvious in warmer weather. Similiar winter weather to Canberra down here. I'd say nothing to worry about, enjoy the ride.

You can get the coolant pressure tested to be sure. Any mechanic should be able to do it and it shouldnt cost much, maybe an hours labour?

I wouldn't be too fussed not uncommon to see ppls gates splattered in black soot/sludge.
That's why at Motels you're not allowed to reverse in near your unit leaves too much mess

Cheers guys. I'm leaning toward nothing to worry about then. Oil is clean and pretty sure coolant level hasn't moved. I agree the choke could be sticking on too. Didn't know you can't reverse into park at a motel. Ya learn something every day
