I need help with my GQ RB30 carby. It will rev perfectly fine. But after about 10 mins of driving it starts losing power, when it happens I end up having to drive in 3rd on highway doing no more that 50km per hour. Have cleaned the carby, put new exhaust on it but nothing seems to have helped. Could it be the distributor causing the problems?

If anyone has had the same dramas please give me some info as to what may be causing the problems as this now has been happening for a good couple of months.

Gidday, mate. Pop over to the introductions and tell us a bit about yourself, and you may get a better response. Have you checked the second stage carby butterfly, because they tend to stick.

Yeh not to sure what to do about it. Have read on other forums it may have something to do with the CAS in the distributor.

I put my stock rb30 on a dyno and discovered that the second stage carby butterfly was stuck shut. The mechanic advised me to pull the carby off and use fine wet'n'dry sandpaper to smooth the bore and butterfly. I found that the butterfly had worn a shallow grove in the bore. It took a few goes to get the butterfly shaped and repositioned. It would run fine, but on some cold mornings it would seize and cause the engine to struggle badly. I persisted and finally got the carby to perform. (12months with no problems). I also refitted the stove pipe and made sure the flap at the top worked. (to heat the carby quicker). If you find that is not a problem, check that the choke break, and vacuum advance diaphragms are not punctured, by using a vacuum pump, or a converted bike pump , (gently does it.) Apart from that, it could be the coil breaking down when it gets warm.

Oh yeah Ben, when the engine would bog down I used to reach around the back of the carby and lift the 2nd stage linkages up. I could feel the butterfly pop free. I took the air filter and housing off, to see what I was doing and get a feel of where the linkage was when it wasn't visable with the housing in place.

yeh mate, going to be cleaning up that secondary butterfly. Have noticed when I do play with it the troll runs better. But when I move the linkages around I can hear a funny hissing sound???
CHeers mudnut for advice!! no one seems to know much about these carby's.

Does anyone know about the coil packs on the rb30 carby.. should they have dual positives or positive and negative? anyone's help would be appreciated. How often do they crap themselves and have tries VL coil and still no difference, car turns over but doesn't want to start.

If its only just started happening since winter has come upon us maybe the auto choke is sticking or at worst seized my sons escort did the same until we fixed the auto choke.

I got so upset with my auto choke, I ditched the thing and fitted a manual choke. I hardly use it, as I feather the throttle and then lock the hand throttle at 1500 rpm. Works for me. As for the wiring, get your 25 posts up and download the manuals. There are good wiring schematics there.

Hi mate, thanks for that. Turns out I was out the other day and my troll just stopped dead in its tracks, thought it was the coil but tried 2 others and still no luck. Had a look at a few different threads and turns out my timing belt snapped so hoping that will solve the problem of losing power and not running properly. DO you know whether the rb30 is a free running head? not a 100% sure whether it may have hit the valves or not.
