Hi all, when driving one day when I put my indicator on my sub fuel tank, battery, air temp lights started flicking in time with the indicator. At my next stop car wouldn't start. Got a jump start and once home got new battery all seemed sweet but alas no. The boys took the alternator off checked it all out and seemed okay but only getting 11.4 or so when putting multimeter on battery. Drove it for a few days and same thing happened except as i was driving on dusk had lights on and they started to dim as well unless i accelerated. Should I be checking the regulator first (checked stock at a few places in brisbane but none in country!) or should I be checking any wiring from the alternator that could be broken. Would really appreciate some advice as I want to drive my Patrol again! Cheers Vikki

Check earths ,might be as simple as a bad connection

Hi Vikki,
Your battery is not being charged at 11.4 volts. As you have said the problem is more then likely with the alternator. There are a few things you should check before condemning the alternator.
1. With the engine running at a fast idle to you get the same voltage reading at the back of the alternator compared with across the battery?
2. Check the "charge" fuse in the fuse box under the bonnet is not blown. It should be a 7.5 amp fuse.
3. Make sure the two wires in the plug that connects to the alternator aren't broken, the wires normally break about 20mm from the plug.
I personally don't think these alternators are worth repairing. Both the regulator and rectifier fail in them as well as the clutch pulley.
You can get replacement aftermarket alternators with solid pulleys from places like Ashdown Ingrams (over at Archerfield), Repco and I believe Bursons.
Ashdown Ingrams are the importers but it's worth calling the other places first to compare prices.

I bought mine from Bursons with a solid pulley, the clutch system can fail badly & I have seen this 3-4 times now
