I've done this. I have the number plate on a hinge with a square receiver behind it which takes the same hitch as the Hay. Re. as the rear.
I'll take some pics if you want.

Do you have winch fitted, ??
Are you off setting hitch to have a view down side of van/boat/trailer

Would think you would use the 3 captive nuts on inside of RHS chassis and make a plate with nuts welded on
for inside of LHS. This will give you a sturdy starting point. You able to put some pics up of underneath ?
Being non airbag will make it easier

I never thought of that idea of using a hinged number plate and a HR connection. It is a good idea that I will be using on my Patrol. Thx m8.

As promised here are some details of the arrangement I made some time ago now to be more easily able to manoeuvre a cumbersome boat in a confined driveway.

I had an old tow bar with the square hole to receive a H.R. hitch. The two steel brackets which connect the Al. Bullbar to the frame are the two points where the cut off bar were attached to:

I took off the Bullbar from the car and welded the bar between the two mounting plates and drilled and cut a matching hole in the front of the bar so the receiver would protrude.

The number plate is on a couple of hinges and when it flips up the hole is visible and the hitch pin can be inserted through the two winch holes top and front. I don't have a winch.

From the front, the hole is almost covered. I glued a couple of fridge seal magnets to the back of the number pate to hold the swinging plate in position but it actually sits nicely by itself.

There are some other crappy pics of the arrangement at PhotoBucket.

Just seen a British setup with the hitch more towards the Passenger side giving the driver a clear view along one side, interesting.

My front towbar (was on the car when I got it) is so useful for manouvering that they will become a standard feature on all my future 4wd's. My towbar is centered and I have no trouble seeing either side of my camper.

@ Pezzer can I ask what you intend to use it for??

We move 2 large boats around and the driveway is quite steep with an awkward dog leg, also a few of the ramps when crowded are easily negotiated when pushing.

Might sound silly but do you think the front end can take the ball weight all the time ?
Be it only occasionally

Shouldn't be a problem our Rangie did exactly this for 10 years when we sold it I removed the bar and there were no signs of stress etc, (the boat was timber making it a fair bit heavier). considering low speed and short distances when in use no, that's why so many do this mod.

Missed this thread...

I think I still have my front tow ball mount with bar that just bolts up. Previous owner used to forward park his boat in a tight spot.

If anyone wants it then a slab of lemonade It's yours.

Pezzer, nice work, however, I'd be a bit concerned at how low it is. Apart from the obvious reduction in front ramp angle, even with mine there are times when I can't wind the drawbar down far enough to connect the trailer without dropping the jockey and allowing the trailer to drop. I also concede that because the difference in height between the front and rear hitch and me using the same ball assembly adds to that difficulty.
To do it properly I either have to turn the ball over - (PITA) or carry another insert and ball with me.

The ball height from the ground is 560mm.
