View Full Version : Mixing oils

I just ordered a 20 litre drum of Penrite HPR Diesel 15/50 (semi synthetic) for my forthcoming oil change. (Wanted to try Delo400 but no Caltex dealers locally any more.)
I have about 9 litres of Penrite HPR Diesel 20/60 (mineral) in the shed already.
Oil change is about 10.5 litres (how irritating is that!)
Is there any problem with using 10 litres of the 15/50 semi synthetic & topping it up with the 20/60 mineral. It would be good to get two oil changes out of the 20 litre drum.
I'm sure if I were out on the road somewhere & had an oil leak & a garage only had the 20/60 to top up with I wouldn't hesitate, but I just want to know that mixing a little mineral oil with the semi synthetic wont do any harm.

Ps. Had quite a large variation in quotes, ranging from $184 (Repco) for 20 litres down to $139 (Autobarn). Supercheap were cheapest for 10litre drums, in fact 2 x 10 litre worked out about a dollar cheaper than Autobarn's 20l price, but they only had one drum, & my experience of ordering stuff though Supercheap's pimply youths had me decide to splurge out the extra dollar at Autobarn. One place, usually very good for parts quoted $111 for 10 litres! Pays to phone around. No doubt city prices are cheaper?

I wouldn't mix different viscosity's cuppa. It might not mix very well and cause all sorts of problems mate.

Don't mix them mate. Only if its an emergency you can do it to get you out of strife. Use the mineral stuff for your mower or similar.

G'day mate,
seems to me that the various oils you quote are already mixed viscosity. 20/60 and 15/50 are blends, so a few extras in either one may not trouble you but I believe the mineral/synthetic mix may not be a good idea.
The mower , if it's like mine, is overdue for a change anyway so give it a surprise.

Ok. :( Thanks people.
The old Deutcher mower would think all it's Christmases had come at once. Nah, still got a few litres of Castrol GTX2 for that, and the B&S Sidevalve water pump motor. I suppose I'll keep the Penrite 20/60 for the bus.
Bloody thoughtless of Nissan to make a motor with a 10.5 litre oil capacity! S'pose I'll have to buy an extra 5 litres. Grrrrr.
20l of Delo for $80 sounds good, will try to remember to go to Warragul next time I need to buy oil ....... Could be some time off with the way I'm 'saving' the Patrol for future travel. It,s taken me two years to clock up 10,000kms! LOL.

Hi Cuppa
I use Penrite 15/50 and love it. It is only a semi synthetic so a small amount of your 20/60 shouldn't hurt especially if the amount you use will probably be less than 0.5lt. I rarely use a full 10.5lt on oil change because there is always some oil left in various areas of the motor no matter how long you let it drip out.
In sunny warm Qld, Repco offer 10% discount to RACQ members and in July it will be 20% so I will stock up on oil and filters.
cheers

I wouldn't think mixing brands let alone viscosities would be a good idea unless it was an emergency.
as others have said give some other stationary engines a birthday, and sump oil some fencing,
