View Full Version : So I Need A New 3lt Turbo

After finding an oil leak from the inlet side pipe to the IC on the turbo I went to see the car doctor who told me a new turbo is needed and fitted will set me back about 2k... nice!

So... I'm told that the Garret turbo is not a serviceable item but after a search seen others say they have purchased this from ebay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GT15-GT25-UNIVERSAL-TURBO-REBUILD-KIT-GARRETT-GT17-GT18-GT20-GT22-PATROL-AUDI-VW/171016724625?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%2 6asc%3D11%26meid%3D8292091815812972493%26pid%3D100 011%26prg%3D1005%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D170904126502%26). . think its worth it? Dont know it I can trust one of the evilbay $500 turbos (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Nissan-Patrol-3-0L-GT2052-Turbo-charger-ZD30DDTi-97-09-/151026710669?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2329e4b88d&_uhb=1) as I only want to fit it once, unless anyone has one and recommends them. Or I can start looking for a Garret and thus far found its going to run at 1400 for a new one but I'm sure the network here we should be able to get a better price...

Any suggestions on where to get a new one or what others have done in the past would be great as I need it for a trip to the snow this school holidays and get out hunting...

Thanks

Try ATP turbo mate. If you have the numbers and type of turbo thus may be the way to go. Other than that try the wreckers.

Bummer mate, $500 to $1400 is a big difference in pricing, If it was me I'd be
going for the brand name been around for years and a great product. Nothing in
the archives on this, would think it would of been discussed before,

I agree threedogs, its better to buy once cry once as they say. Well I have been ringing around and Berrima Diesel tell me nothing ever goes wrong with ZD turbos but it will only cost me 2 to 3 hundred for them to look at it. Think I better get other opinions from other mechanic to see what they think.

Stock turbos do let go. Plenty of blokes have had to upgrade.

But garret un-serviceable? I'd be ringing a garret sales rep and asking because I'm pretty sure they do kits to rebuild. Aslong as the impeller hasn't let go.

Maybe get a compression test done. It may not have been run in correctly.
What did the mechanic say was wrong with it?

What was actually wrong with the turbo mate?

Seems there is an oil leak on the outlet side. Depending on what the leak is though. My turbo's outlet side is usually a little wet or damp with oil but I put it down to the catch can not catching everything. If yours is the same I wouldn't worry too much but if its actually really wet and dripping the seals maybe gone in the turbo. Don't know where you are but Rotomaster in the northern burbs of Melbourne are authorised Garret disty's.

Yes I know this, I was discussing with remmy the other night.

I want to know what the mechanic has diagnosed this as.

The vehicle has a rebuilt motor in it and gets driven like "ms daisy" and used a fair bit of oil in 1700km. I would be checking the compression before forking out for a new turbo cos if the engine hasnt been run in correctly this could also be a reason for the oil disappearing and the "wet" turbo housing.

Ok guys. When I saw the engine rebuilder today, who does diesels, he started it and got me to rev it up and he told me that its a seal thats going and that the whistle noise shouldn't be there either. I do have another bloke to see on Thursday who I know is a top notch engine rebuilder and has done ZD30's, so I'll see what he has to say.

Got to have a giggle when the bloke first saw all the NADS and asked me "What's all this then?" so I explained it and I think he learnt something today.

Picture from the other day..... worse now.

As for the oil loss nissannewby I filled it back up and it only took about 1100ml (I was wrong about that but don't tell my wife I said that) to be spot on and thats over 1900ks, so not that bad. I'm going to degrease and have a look in the IC and pipes and see if the turbo is pooling oil inside.

Cheers guys

Mate I would be getting another opinion. I noticed you mentioned a whistle noise. The noise could be as simple as the hose clamp where the oil leak is, is leaking boost. If the oil can get out I dare say boost pressure will as well, which will be heard in the form of a whistle.
As for the oil leak what type of catch can have you got. Is it collecting the oil mist properly. Unfortunately for the turbo it is the lowest point and the oil can collect there just as much as a catch can when the turbo isn't throwing it at the intercooler of course.

Its a chinky filled with pot scrubbers that was on the car when I bought it, and Im going to change it this week. Im going to take off the pipes and clean them out change the catch can and tighten everything and see how it goes before splashing out on a new turbo.

I have a turbo sitting here doing nothing, if you want to swap it out to be sure you are welcome to borrow it, still on the motor sitting on my driveway, might pay to swap it out first before you part with you hard earned reddies

Cheers Morton.. Wow. Im going to just clean and change the can and run it for the week first and if it still doing it go the next step. If no joy I might just take you up on that offer.

Thank you

Remmy

Update: So on the weekend I cleaned the turbo off and had a look in my catch can and took out some of the pot scrubbers, reason being as I thought that it might be too full and may stop oil draining down. Toot it up hill and down again and its still leaking as in the picture. So before i go lashing out on a new turbo I'm going to disconnect the catch can and block the end to the inlet pipe, clean inlet pipes inside and out and if still leaking where it is then.... well turbo time. But can anyone tell me how to tell if its oil or water cooled before I go on the elimination process?

Cheers

I had issues with my turbo on the Gu 3 and took it to turbo glide in wollongong, they serviced it and fitted an electronic boost controller. No probs since in fact i think it feels better than ever. They said it was jamming open or shut and overboosting as a result, i had ether no power or it was boosting of its head, as i said now no probs at all.

Update: Its been a long wet week! So I managed to get the pipe that runs from the air filter to the turbo off for inspection and it was clean and dry, no oil, even where the PVC pipe runs into it. Looking into the turbo was a different story. In the picture below you can see the clean oil pooling in the bottom of the elbow on the turbo:( (the mark in the middle of the oil is where my finger went when feeling inside) so its worse case scenario being a seal that has gone. On the upside I have got myself a good second hand unit on its way from ebay..... 46$ + postage winning bid:bigthumbup: and with free fitting by my very good mates, even better. I will let you know how it goes.
