Thought I'd put up some pics of my Patrol with new wheels, rubber & with factory flares fitted, now that I've got the blue crap off the lettering with the Gerni. (Thanks TD).
Tyres are Bridgestone D697 All Terrains 265/75 16 & rims are 16 x 8 ROH Black Trak2 16 x 8's.
First a 'before' pic (with 5.5" split rims & Bridgestone 661's 235/85)

I mentioned yesterday there was a problem fitting the new wheels/tyres onto the dual rear carriers.
These are the 'old' tyres - note the gap between the upright post & the tyre.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2013/06/39.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cuppa500/8983646355/)
The problem with the new tyres was that their front lower edge fouled the back of the canopy making it impossible to get them fully upright, however I thought there was probably a 10% chance that a little fettling with the angle grinder might give me the clearance I needed. At this point I was still unsure if the tyre would still be too wide. The next pic shows the old split rim centre. Note that the centre hole is not round, but rather has 'raised' sections next to each stud hole protruding into the centre.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2013/06/40.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cuppa500/8983643437/)
Those raised sections were enough to allow the wheel to sit square over the guide at the top of the hole (see above) onto the holder once the nuts were done up.
The hole centre of the ROH wheels is round, without those raised sections/cut outs. I thought if I 'radiused' the guide, it might allow the wheel to bolt flat against the holder, which might, if I was lucky, give just enough clearance to allow me to get the wheel vertical.

.
It's a tourer. Choice of 265's was a compromise between being able to run lower tyre pressures & fuel consumption...... and of course 285's wouldn't have fitted my spare wheel carriers as they would have been taller, I wanted to stay with the the same diameter, which I managed within 2mm.

Haven't put a full load in it yet, but the tyre joint put in 40psi all round & said to go up to 50psi in the rear (leaving the fronts at 40 psi) when fully loaded. If this is proves correct it fits with the upgraded GVM tyre placard wich specifies 265/75LT @ 50psi. I have to say that I am well pleased. 68psi in the rear with the previous tyres worried me a bit.

170 litres I think. With the weight & wind resistance this has given me around 950 to 1000kms range with the old tyres.

I'm all ears provided it's affordable, reliable & doesn't mean that I have to drive with my eyes on gauges all the time.

It's possible. 3" exhaust and wind the boost up. Would need a temporary gauge to set it but no gauges would be necessary.
You don't generally watch them all the time. I tend to watch mine more so when towing up hill most other times its a quick glance every now and then. You generally learn how to drive to suit the gauges once you have watched them for a little.

1000 k range will cover any road in aust
And as Matt suggests a few more ponies too, anything to help these motors breathe has to be good,
, no harm can come of it just makes the motor more efficient
Cuppa
8th June 2013, 07:53 PM
3" exhaust is a possibility when the current one needs replacing but increasing the boost concerns me a bit in terms of reliability & longevity. This may well be a result of my ignorance about such things, but it is reassuring that in stock form I can take the car to any Nissan workshop & be reasonably confident that they know what they are doing. Start changing the basic parameters & this may no longer be the case. Not saying you're wrong, rather I'm inviting you to convince me as better fuel consumption/greater range is attractive. :)

Would think any mechanic worth his salt would be able to service your Patrol with these minimum mods.
Thinking EGR block as well. but later for that.
Straight from Mr Nissan most engines are asmatic giving the ability to breathe can only help.
with no fear on any long or short term harm,
Unleash the beast within I say, listen to others who have same set up or similar motor.
Cause I know you'll want the best reliability you can get, goes without saying

I can get 17/100 towing 2.5t +. Normal driving will see me doing high 12's or low 13's. This is running 285's as well. Also wound the fuel pump up pushing 25psi and bigger turbo.
Cuppa you only need to up the boost a small amount and its not going to effect reliability or longevity. The service you get from a Nissan dealer (or lack there of) will never notice a small tweak.

8th June 2013, 08:16 PM
Hey cuppa I would think even with the mildest of tunes you will drive onto a Dyno and run at about 65rwkws and be able to get a comfortable 80rwkws with a conservative setting below 12psi. That is nearly a 25% increase drive in drive out without doing much else and Never giving it another thought ever.
Push it and you'd get 90rwkw but I know your not really interested in pushing it that hard. But as 3d says they are as asmatic straight out of the dealership and crying to be tuned

8th June 2013, 08:36 PM
Ok, so with it possible to improve performance/fuel consumption with very conservative 'tweaks' & no adverse side effects why didn't Nissan do it as standard? I understand that manufacturers often produce vehicles with, for example, less than optimal airflow as a result of mass production techniques, but if a larger diameter exhaust were standard (minimal extra cost) & the boost set a bit higher (no extra cost) why wouldn't they do it?

Don't worry about giving it tickle up, it will handle it well.
Think of it this way Cuppa, my 89 GQ had a 3 inch exhaust, Safari Turbo Kit and android mod.....that was a long time ago. A long time to know if there are any problems.
I went all over Australia with that truck, and used to push it along up over 160 kph when i lived in the NT . ( Not for extended periods though, only for five or ten minutes at a time. There is no point going that fast in a Patrol )

Well an exhaust & a small tickle are looking more & more like a possibility & I certainly have no intention of moving back to England. Thanks everyone, this forum has provided me with much of the knowledge & motivation I've needed to get this far. And yes I am pleased with what I've done.
It really doesn't seem that long ago that I was asking whether I should buy this Patrol after I'd realised that buying the Troopy had been a mistake, but a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then.
I have even become comfortable with the fact that I'm not a 'hardcore' 4wd'er, but a 'tourer' & whilst having 4wd is important I don't feel any need to seek out 'gnarly stuff' for fun but am comfortable that we have a strong vehicle to get off the beaten track without falling to bits & which has the capability to get us through gnarly stuff if necessary.

Nice set up you have got so any news on the tires
Have only done very limited mileage on them, so can't comment on wear, but I remain pleased with my choice.
On the bitumen they are quiet.
On the one foray off road I've taken them on, they handled & gripped in slippery wet conditions (muddy & wet grass) up & down reasonably steep hills better than I expected them too, without reducing air pressure.
They have been across the wet paddocks at home a few times, the old narrower tyres would have done so too, but would have left deep furrows where these left relatively minor tracks.
The camper stays semi loaded all the time, & Ive found 40 psi front, & 44 psi rear to be adequate, which gives a more comfortable ride than the previous 68psi needed in the rear.
The tread does hold bits of gravel from time to time, & then flings it off once speed is increased, but I'd say most AT's would do that.
It'll take a lot more miles to determine how they'll last, but that aside I think I made a good choice for a combination of home & touring use. Although not looking as aggressive as some of the 'knobbier' AT's the tread pattern is actually quite open.
The mud flaps, although a bit bigger than those they replaced, are a bit disappointing as stone chipping & mud fling onto the door sills remains an issue. Making them any lower will render them vulnerable off road, so I'll probably end up re-painting the sills with some of that stone guard paint.

G'day Plumy,
Rims are negative 13mm offset. Fitting the flares is very easy, they attach with double sided tape & several small clips. Clean the painted surface well, I washed it first, dried it, & then gave it another wipe with isopropyl alcohol (Jaycar have it). Make sure you are properly lined up 'cos once the tape is on it ain't coming off again! The 265’s are about as wide as you can go with these flares. I may still fit some bigger mud flaps as the sills & lower door cop a hiding from gravel, (but they did previously with the narrower split rims too). I think lower rather than wider mud flaps might help, but may also be more prone to getting hung up.

Thanks for the reply Cuppa,
Just waiting to hear from the guy on ebay about getting the flares sent out to me, so is there a reason for the neg 13 ? would i not be ok running a 0 offset with 265/75/16 ?

12th December 2013, 05:33 AM
Plumy,
The 265 tyre is 20mm wider than stock on a wide wheel kitted patrol from the factory.
In my case the stock tyre rubbed on the chassis rails as posted previously, so going to a slightly wider tyre was going to rub more, possibly doing damage.
The only ROH rim that suited had the -13 offset, that moved the rim out 23mm from stock giving plenty of clearance for it all to fit.
So using a 265 tyre on a 0 offset rim you may find the tyre will touch the chassis when flexing, as you have the rim you might as well use them and see what happens.
Also you will not be exceeding the maximum track allowed by most states from what I can figure out anyway. +25mm wider is the limit?
