Anyone got a GQ body shell lying around that they can take a picture of the inside of the roof with the lining removed?. Want to see if there is access to the outer shell from inside the vehicle to fix rust there (particularly near the gutter area).

Would really appreciate it
Thanks

No pics but I can tell you the rear gutter is quite accessible from the inside. The inner skin along the rear has nice big holes in it.
It would be fiddly but I reckon can be done.

The Side gutter is double skinned and not so easy. If you took the lining out from the affected side completely then you would likely have to cut some of the internal skin out to get to it. When i fixed the roof rail dent it was harder than i thought.

Remove rust as much as possible, rust kill and convertor, then weld or glue plate over the holes, bog, sand and paint....

Most rust is along sides just above gutters (and in gutters) so probably not worth removing liner then (don't wanna cut holes in inner skin). So all work to be done from the outside. Any tips for fixing something to the inside of the hole from the outside of the car (which doesn't involve welding. I am not and do not know any welders and frankly probably couldn't afford it anyway). I'm guessing one would have to push something through the hole and somehow bond it in place to the inside and then bog it over...

Fiberglass it mate. buy the kit from Super cheap and glass over it once you have cut all the crap out. Fibreglass will span over the holes with ease.

MudRunnerTD,
but I can't fiberglass 'over' the hole because I will be fixing it from the outside (else I will get a hump after filling etc). So either I bash the hole in a bit and then fibre it or I somehow push something through the hole, get it to stick to the inside and then I can fill it. Else i will have nothing to 'fill' it it onto.... Hope that kinda makes sense... I'm new to 'bodywork'. Can fix shit with a spanner but this is all new.... but I do like doing stuff myself

Appreciate the help though

Watching the panel beaters work out the back of our work over the years, and they use this fancy glue, and glue the new bit of tin on the outside - they reckon it is stronger, and causes less panel distortion - thin skim of bog, shape it up....done.

yeah i had the same trouble recently and i re-dented the panel to make room for the fibreglass.

If you drop the roof lining on that side and see if you can get in there and glass from the inside to give you something to bog too.

Alternatively, confirm that it is a sealed rail then fill with expanda foam then bog over the top.

As Mic says above though its think panel steel, cut out the bad bits and form up some new steel and glue it over the top.

Go to a Wrecker and cut out the gutter and roof sections in long lengths and then use bits of it to fill the spaces. maybe?

If they are gluing from the outside then do they beat the panel in a bit so when its glued in its not raised above the height of the rest of the panel? Whats the glue called? Could you find out? Sounds bloody good if it could be done like that....

Cheers Daz! the expanda foam has given me some ideas

Wouldn't expanda foam cause even more problems if was wet.... water is getting in somewhere...

Have a look at post #13 in http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/nissan-patrol-gq-y60-ford-maverick-11/gq-dual-cab-build-3-a-100642/

can see the structure of the body there. Might be able to spray something in through the top of the inner skin where it nearly meets the roof...
