View Full Version : Tyre rotation pattern

Later this week I'll be getting 6 new tyres fitted to my new rims & put on the Patrol. Included in the price ($260 each for 265/75LT Bridgestone D697's) is 10,000km tyre rotations for the life of the tyres. I could do it at home , but it's far easier to drive in & have them do than mucking around with jacks & stands in a dirt floor shed.

I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me what the best rotation pattern is for 6 tyres including two spares? Rotate all 6 or rotate 4 & keep the two spare unused unless needed?

Most diagrams I've seen show 4 or 5 tyres.

Maybe just go with the 5 tyre diagram as normal, but bump the second spare forward to the "spare" position next time around (number one tyre then becomes second spare in this sequence),

Easy to keep track of, plus keeps ALL tread/rolling DIA even for using spares on a rear axel with a LSD.

I generally do mine in a clock wise rotation. What you rotate is up to you, the 2 spares might stay good for 3 sets but then you might get twice the k's by rotating all six. Maybe someone who has done this will comment.

I only do 4 and leave my spare.

I have been told to only change right hand side tyres with right hand side so rhs front to rhs rear same as the other because ofthe way they are made. But the guy telling could be lying. More than likely is but what the boy above say sounds good

you might have a directional tyre that self cleans and will get clogged up if reversed

Some Tyres are directional. Most radials can be mounted with white writing in or out so that kind of rules out the directional thing you were told.

I've always been told fronts go to rear on the same side the rears go to the opposing fronts,
not sure why ppl want a brand new spare/s but thats another topic, thus only 4 tyre rotation
tyre shop must know 6 tyre rotation pattern , can;t even figure out how to get 6 wearing even.
Do have a mate , with extended GU running 6, travels world wide I;ll email and see how he gets around it.

Thats sorta what I do as I like to have 6 tyres mounted and have two spares for longer trips out bush.

Like threedogs, I don't see the point of 'saving' a spare/s unless someone is absolutely certain they will continue using the same tyre and pattern next time. I prefer to wear equally and replace all 6 of mine at the same point so I can change brand/pattern.

For 6 non-directional tyres I just go from front to opposite rear to spare. This means that I get even wear on the tread blocks as the direction of rotation is reversed and it is not the same leading edge slapping the road/dirt/rocks.

I don't pay much attention to which side on the front axle a tyre was on during it's prev cycle as I have never had any issue with uneven inside/outside wear on a Patrol.

Cuppa, the above works for me but each to their own and maybe check with the tyre place in case they specifically want to do a different way for your purchase.

Should mention I leave my spare as its not mounted on a wheel (don't ask). Hopefully get it sorted one day.

Just the thought of buying 6 new tyres makes me shiver, but I'll stick to thread, I've emailed Ron he has the extended GU, and hopefully he'll reply shortely.
@ Matt have you ever had to use that 6th tyre yet. I know we took 2 spares to the Cape in '83 only HT available then, used both spares but we were on Creb track not far from Cooktown
home of the barefoot tyre changer. was in awe of the guy and only $10 a pop to repair.
