Wowser, that's stuffed.. your taking 2 totally extremely different mods though..
1/4 cut is a few hundred, cab cut is thousands...
Choose your lines and 1/4 cut I'd say, repair what is left after the cut..

Could just cut out the rusty spots, weld in some new material, bog it up, and throw a coat of paint over it.
Doesn't even have to be perfect as you won't see it

Install an electronic anti rust system onto your car Healy. If it was a mine car then this could be the start mate.
Not a f an of a dual cab cut down especially with a family. You will cut the cuts free capsule off the back and stack all your sh1t out side on the tray! Just don't get it.
Been out and played real hard with guys driving countdowns. All my stuff is mud free, their swag is muddy, their fridge is muddy, their Stuff is wet and Muddy!!

It's a prick to cut but will be easy to seal up when done I'm half way through left hand side just following the barn door and light I'm turning dummy lights into working ones aswell it's the best solution for now as my bar was all trashed and barely connected also

It's only cost me $70 to get what I need to do the job I've got all the tools already to do the job
Alitis007
1st June 2013, 12:21 AM
Actually healy i think your a bit off with your cost of the job, personally IMO i rekon it will cost more around the $500 mark if not more, i could be wrong tho. First up the cut and shut, thats easy you get some flat sheet say 2mm thick maybe some off cuts from a sheet metal place and you weld it in, seam seal it and paint it. Your after market tail light will cost you say $100 a pair your wire them in BUT. Coz you got rid of the lights on the bumper your spare tyre now will live on the roof basket unless you want a defect. You still need to give it some form of protection so you make quarter bars, not with 2mm exhaust pipe coz its pretty much useless if it takes a strike but out of some 4mm steam pipe and some 4mm flat plate, say you want a double tube like your pic you'll need atleast 4 elbows say at $30 each the some straight pipe probably at around $30 a meter and just to be safe you get 3 meters and that will need to be painted or powder coated so another $50. You'll also need to make mudflaps so you dont get pinged for that aswell, say that cost you $20 for the pair.
Just from my rough guessing of prices i just cost you $380 assuming you can get the 2mm and 4mm flat plates for nothing and you don't get a bigger roof basket.
I said to do a body swap coz the simple fact of the matter is, eventually more rust is going to pop up and i was looking at the bigger picture or you could say my own logic. I'm not trying to knock you mate, i rekon thats a top effort having a crack at some serious body mods and good on you for having a go and i'm just saying to look at the long term and not the simple fix now....

Maybe strip as a wrecking vehicle, use what you want, sell the rest and get a new bus. But if work and a bit if time with no 4by, but you know what you want in a car now (gu cut down) so you can buy what you want..

Healy,
Did you buy it with a RWC? Cause that ain't roadworthy as it is
A bit of a tough repair, but there are guys that can fix stuff like this and plenty of other people have had chassis repairs done from torn, cracked or broken rails.
You would have to cut, insert a sleeve or fishplates, and reweld a good rear end. Not sure how that will go legally though, as i don't think they allow cut and shuts anymore.

The amount of work required to cut and shut it correctly is huge. You would need to cut well past where the rust stops and then go from there, would prob be a body off job. Can you look into a rolling chassis at all? These can go relatively cheap ( no diff centers just chassis with wheels. Then swap it all over.

That's pretty bad for a GU, how did it get like that? I just took off the trim of my 1981 MQ to spray fish oil in and the rear quarters were good, apart from 32 years of dust and spider webs! I thought the GU would be galvanised.
Regarding your chop, I've not seen one on a GU either, personally I'd just fix the holes. I'm guessing you'd need a chop to be engineered.

It is hard to see from the pics, but it may be just that you need an adjustable Panhard bar to recentralize the diff.
Springs and shocks look to be ok.... don't spend anything on it till you get someone else to confirm.

On another look at the pics, it may be just that the Spring lift is too much for the standard control arms.
My brother in Laws was doing the same with 5" lift on standard arms.

This happens on the larger lifts due the diff rolling as it is pushed down. It shouldn't happen on a 2" lift. I think this car has had it and the right decision has been made.
