I have searched the forum and haven't found the answer I want. Does a 3" exhaust on it's own make much difference to a stock TD42TI. I have a mate who drove away from the exhaust shop feeling there was hardly any difference. Before I spend $1,000 I would like some opinions.

It's the beginning ;)

From there you will fit a manual Boost Controller for $120 then take it and have it Dyno Tuned and see potentially a 40% increase in power.

BIG SMILE DAY ;)

hi paps I put a 3" dump pipe and exhaust on mine and the turbo spooled up earlier in the rev range and puts out a great sound

Yes they make a difference but you shouldn't be paying anywhere near $1000 for a 3" system for one of these. Check out Scott's Rods in the vendor section.

They are quite easy to install yourself.

Cheers, it would certainly be an advantage spooling up a few hundred revs earlier. I'll check Scott's Rods.

As mudrunner said its the start , now the gases can get out , I found on mine adding the snorkel helped a bit ,air in air out although not mega noticeable , but it should help when I am ready to get it tuned , all in baby steps when the budget allows

I'd agree with your mate.
Mine cost about $650 fitted and honesly it was a waste of money.
But I was going to fit further bits and tuning etc as Muddy has said, only to be talked out of it by a very repsected diesel mechanic that lives near here.
This guy builds pumps etc and concentrates on the fuel side of the engines, he is flat out keeping up with work so I was listening when he said if you want long term reliability leave it as it is.
His own stock GQ has done 500000klm without having a spanner on it, his words were they are gutless but you can't kill em unless you start fiddling.
Mine is a TD4.2Ti as well.

In saying that there are plenty and I know of one that run big numbers. The one I know of that runs big numbers has spent more of its life modified than standard and at present is pushing 200rwkw and 35psi, it has clocked over more than 400,000km and still going strong. The last power figures I quoted he has been running for at least a year and its his daily work hack. The td42 is one solid donk.

Keep me in mind mate when your ready, I may be able to help you out and save you some coin. The only thing I can't do is give you a dyno printout.

I quite believe the engine is that good, and would be great to have that performance.
If I was doing the exhaust upgrade now, I would also commit to further mods as you talk about or aleast some of the way.
Still say the exhaust on its own is not worth the money which was the origional posters question in this thread.
I just dont have the funds or bottle to mod the engine further, mines been built up to be an outback tourer and my hair is grey LOL.

When I had mine done $900 fitted with dump pipe etc it definitely spooled earlier and made a couple extra psi but not much, since then I had it tuned and now runs a modest 15 psi and runs well but I fear it's time to do a little more now :)
