Hey all, i'm looking at a few tyres and can't decide what to get. I had my eyes set on these
Hurcules Trail Digger
29654
But have also got the option of these
Dunlop grandtrek MT2
29655
Summit Mud hog ( i think can't remember now lol)
29656
Silverstone mt 117 sport
29657
What should i get?? What looks like a good tread pattern for the type of terrain we have here in vic??

How bout some details on the tyres.
I know the first is the Hercules
The third look like Summit

Myself I like the look of the second one but have no idea what brand they even are

Some very aggressive tread there.. imo either of the first 2. They have a nice open outer design but a more solid center. This'll give good tracking on the solid stuff while allowing mud to clear easily from the outer. Which imo is were you want the grip as most the time your trying to climb the rut walls..

Yeah its not just the pattern of the tyre, its the production quality and rubber compound too. Lots of new brands coming out which may be good tyres but if you stick with the more traditional brands then at least you have anecdotal evidence of your fellow patrollers:)

Are you going to fit them for daily driving or have two sets (one for play, one for bitumen)? This'll make a big difference.
What kind of terrain tickles your fancy? Get up the high country in winter or hit the beaches in summer? massive difference
Im sure the vic boys will help you out with the seasonal differences of your area

I don't know what terrain i like yet i want to try it all while i'm setting up the rig as a sort of all rounder, but in the mean time have a bit more ground clearance for the diffs and alot more traction that the AT's off rd. like i said its a play set. I know from other wheels that the cheapies are hard compound n last forever but slide all over the place but so do my current Bridgestone Duelers and they're not cheap. What i'm thinking is if i was to get a tyre thats chews up the harder tracks i shouldn't have a drama with anything in between, yeh?

I like the 1st and the 3rd set in that lot George. Also look at the Bighorns which look very similar to the 3rd ones I think.

I really like the look of the first ones.. They scream Potential!!!

What size tyres are you looking at? 33s? If you do a spring lift first you should be able to fit 35s with a 2" lift?
Are you going to run two sets of tyres? Worth it IMO if it's your daily.

I cannot recommend the Silverstone tyres. As you know I have the 117 Extreme and they are honestly a pretty crap tyre...... handle and grip like a bag of sh## on road, are noisy as all hell (expected though with that tread pattern), wear down extremely fast (don't think I'll get 10,000kms out of this set) and I seem to get punctures all the time? Even running 18 psi they just don't bag out.
They are unbelievable in the sloppy stuff though! Great on rocks too but damage really easily.
Would I buy them again? No.

Yeah they aint got nothing on the simex jungle trekkers of which they seem to be copied from.

As winnie has said, id probably go for the spring lift first or save a little longer and go the lift and tyres at the same time. 33's are probably as big as you need to go for an entry level sort of thing.
Ideally keep your AT's for daily driving then you can get a softer, grippier more expensive tyre for the play weekends and you wont feel bad wearing them out prematurely on the black stuff.

those hercules look pretty darn good.
I havent ever heard anyone praising the Dunlops (doesnt mean it hasnt happened)
the summit mud hogs look very similar pattern to Cooper stt's and Mickey T's mtz
No idea about the silverstone sports but imo they dont look that good?

Have you looked at the better known brands?? I know it can make a huge difference between driving something and not, also how long they last and durability. I have run Mickey T claws, TTC claws and MTZ's, Simex centipedes and BF Goodrich KM2's.

The BFG's would be the best all round tyre. They grip exceptionally well on the black top, sand and mud (even at 38psi).
Both style of claws are noisy but work well in the softer terrains, the MTZ's are great on the harder rocky terrain.
And the simex. These things work pretty bloody well as a serious play tyre. Wet rock they arent great but I think this could be made much better with beadlocks. The reason I chose to give these things a go (apart from the cost) was I watched a winch challenge DVD and most cars in these events are similar in set ep and power. The 2 tyres that stood out, as in could drive the furtherest before winching, were the Sticky treps and the simex centipedes.

Maxxis, Mickey's or simex. around the 35 inch

They would be my choices. If you keep them off the road they will last a long time.

And the lesson here is that the Silverstones hit the market running as a well priced Copy of the Simex ET2. Standing side by side and the Silverstones have smaller blocks and bigger gaps. I thought at the time that my Simexs would last for 3 sets of the Silverstones and they do that by a long shot so that makes the Silverstones Really Bloody Expensive!

I got some other really good advice early in the piece. I could not fathom at the time spending $2k on a set of play tyres!! WTF!!! Who does that! Well if you consider that you buy new, buy good and keep for 5 years then sell when they are 60 to 70% for 50% of the cost and upgrade to the new ones again.

You always use the best bit of the tyre and after the initial investment they are actually very economical.

Buy the best Play tyre that you can and buy 35s if your going to go that way.

I got quoted on some BFG's for around $400 a pop but was told that the Dunlops are just as good but don't know if its a sales pitch, but if i was out doing tracks oftenly i would have them sitting in my shop already but seeing as these wheels will only get used once a month and only put on when i do go out for a play it could be to my benefit to get something like these budget tyres.

Honestly mate i don't muck around with tyres, on my rx theres around $500 per corner, the rears only last 5 to 10,000km depending how often i take it out so for the trol any tyre i get would last till its nackered lol. 35's are out of the question ATM but i was going with 33's coz they fit in the wheel arch and my current height so i can still play in the work horse and play harder in the toy!!

Alitis007
27th May 2013, 10:07 PM
I should mention i have been quoted between $260 to $$350 for the tyres i first posted about

nissannewby
28th May 2013, 09:08 AM
I paid 400 a tyre for my BFG's and even with everything I have done on them they have only just got to half worn going by the tread depth and have put 55,000km on them so this is where the differences come in. I worked out ifi were to buy a cheaper tyre around the $350 mark then it would cost 20% more in the long run.

I am really considering the Hurcules coz they're made in the US aswell but i'm willing to take the gamble on them to try them and give feedback to every to see how they stack up against the BFG's this weekend at Tallarook coz i think Jonathan has them so we can do a comparison??.

Matt the k's and how well you say the BFG's perform has definitely put them to the top if my list.

If i got the Hurcules and wasn't happy them i could sell them off and go straight for the KM2's.

Sorry guys no pics yet, tomorrow i'll fit them but i had fun trying to balance them, got 3 within 3 grams on each side but got slack with the other 2 lol i think 10 to 15 grams out each side but atleast the steering wheel wont vibrate it self off while i'm driving to Tallarook on the weekend! Also had 1 tyre that was a prick to seat the bead coz of how it was transported ( the beads are pushed close together and doesn't inflate coz it wont seal ) but i eventually got it on with the help of a 14" solid rubber donut that you stretch over to take up the void!

If you need info on the Hercules (or any other tyres for that matter), I can help here, make sure you get the U.S.A ones, there are some chinese ones which are not as good, the usa Terra trac's are much better, if you need some, message me, I work for a place that sells them, we are in Melbourne, south east suburbs.. I put some of the Hercules on my dad's car, and they are really good, quite cheap too..
