View Full Version : Running cables from battery to boot behind panel inside?

I think the title makes sense.
Pretty much I want to put an Anderson plug mounted to the trim on the passenger side in the boot area.
I will be running a 16mm cable and want to know what is the beast way to get it in there?

Regards

Shaun

Along the chassis rail then up through the floor at the back in a GU

In a GQ through the fire wall then under the kick plates and into the back is pretty easy too. If you are running a fridge then go big mate. Voltage drop is a bitch.

Cheers. Yep is for me GU

And it's for my compressor. Draws about 63amp under full load.
16mm2 5 meters is good for 87 amp :) with a .6V drop.

lol I ran 50mm2 to the back for mine. i then had enough to run a fridge too and also enough that the wire was not running at the high end of its limit and getting hot.

50mm2, that's crazy. But hey better to always go over. What size anderson plug you use?

Works out you could run 270 amps through that cable.

50amp of ebay

I also have a fuse board in the back and run a compressor hard wired, a LED setup all switched separately, a double Anderson plug to run 2 fridges when touring and an inverter and also an Anderson plug to the bumper for the camper when towing but its handy to run a lead off to run the fridge out of the car it need be.

Nah never too big. I ran wire to the back of the GQ 3 times and each time was not big enough and each time got bigger and bigger. 50mm is perfect. Never had a problem since. If it aint as big as your finger it aint big enough! bugger the maths.

I am going to run 70mm to the winch ;)

Needs good insulation as well if running along chassis rail.
Look at some double insulated wire. Run that to a junction
box and branch off that to suit your needs, use a thermal
circuit breaker, rated to your requirements at the battery end
as close to pos + as possible, Step wiring down as required.
You can go TOO BIG but you'd notice it, Check someone's winch
Thats as thick as welding wire, and just does the job, if most had a choice
something bigger would be the go. Big rubber bungs under the back on
each side, sometimes these trap water,

I have Gu and ran mine through the firewall on passenger side then through the kick panels up to the back. Was 6 BS which from memory is 16mm2 and it terminates at a 6 way fuse box which currently has fridge plug and awning led lights wired in.

I'll take pic of the Redarc panel filler , as above I think they ran 6mm figure 8 to rear panel

Used mainly for awning light or just as extra 12 v outlet. Note small toggle switch,
this is for my rear cargo led light.

Mine is purely for my compressor. Theres already a socket for a fridge back there.

Mudrunner who told you 50mm2 is only good for 50amp. That is way of mate.

Threedogs i will be using double insulated cable. I get it all from work :)

@ Shaun put me down for some. lol
Jaycay sell junction boxes so you can step down wire size.
Some 4x4 have mini fuse panel at the back to Branch out for other accessories.

No noone mate, i run 50 amp plugs because they are cheap and a good size with good flow. When i first set up the back of the GQ i ran a decent wire to the back and the Waeco suffered badly from voltage drop as did the compressor. I re ran the wire 3 times each time getting bigger until i was happy with the performance at the back. In Hindsight i think i have 35mm wire not 50mm :) was late ;)

70mm wire going to the winch though.

Where do you work mate?

yes i have a mini Fuse board in the back from a Junction box. Before the Junction box though i have a Battery Isolation switch and can turn the lot off.

I can get jboxs from work to, conduit if i want better insulatiom but not plugs.

Im surprised a 35mm2 cable fits into a 50amp plug.
I ordered 120amp plugs to be on the safe side.
Allowable dc volt drop is 5%. So 0.6v. So im all good.

Threedogs if you where in perth i could get any size cable up to 300mm2 and multicore stuff to. Even fire rated cables

Drew. Cheers maye that looks to be the easist. I cant put a power panel in the back there as i have drawers.

Its an arb twin motor compressor with a total draw around 65amp. Each motor is protected by 40Amp fuse. So cable and the fuse to go at the start of the run needs to minumim of 80amp

Mud runner for that 35mm cable what fuse holder/circuit breaker have you used?

Missed your question before. I work at a ship building company. Austal Ships

Ah true, didnt see that. Austal down in Hendo!!

The way you were talking I was thinking electrical wholesale, MM, L&H, Rexel and the like, worked for those companies for a lot of years, pretty knowledgeable when it comes to cables etc. You a sparky?

70mm wire going to the winch though.

I have 70mm running between the crank battery under the bonnet & he auxiliary batteries in the pod. Starter & aux batteries can be joined by a manual switch to run the winch, hence the heavy cable. Compressor in the pod runs off the starter battery, & has a short run of 35mm cable supplying it. When running it draws around 35amps, but recommended fuse for it is 80 amps. If running cable along he chassis rails think about protecting it from flying stones. If the the insulation were sliced off things could get pretty hot pretty quick. I used the spiral wrap around stuff usually used to protect hydraulic hoses.
