i bought a new solenoid off ebay http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=171034221221
i wired it all up so i have an in cab switch, all went together ok but when i was winding the rope up it sounded like it didnt have much power,
so i tested it out up a little hill today and when the rope gets tight it just dies, its has no power at all! the lights on my dash go a bit dull and thats it!
the old warn solenoid would have pulled me up the incline no dramas at all but it started clicking every now and again so i replaced it!

that is the incline nothin steep at all?
any clues?
cheers

Sounds like you have a connection problem on the supply to the winch and getting a voltage drop under load.
Check connections to battery and earthing.

Yep voltage drop. Dead battery
That link is not working mate.

Your revs are around 1500 rpm ??
As soon as it has load it struggles so all of above.
Bad or loose connection, causing probs
battery needs to be 100% condition

all the connections are tight and clean, i used this diagram,

i dont really know what i should be checkin for voltage drop? which terminals on the solenoid?

sounds like the 12v you need for winch power is going through that switch you put inside, By pass that
switch and see what happens, Does that toggle get hot???

With your multimeter, have the winch running, check between the crimp of the battery wire at the solenoid, and F1 or F2 crimps. Should have virtually no voltage. Can also do:
battery terminal to positive input at solenoid.
negative on winch to negative battery.
F1/2 solenoid to F1/2 winch.
At each point, with the winch running, you should have no voltage. If you do, theres a problem between those points. Anything less than half a volt or so shouldnt be an issue.

gday mate, i check the terminals as you said and yeah they are all under half a volt!
its got me buggered because i left the winch running for 5 mins with no cable and it was power surging, it would sound fine one minute then next minute it was bearly turning at all n sounds like it has no power at all!
another thing thats got me f$@ked is when i ran the winch the other day the sub tank on the dash cluster stayed on, (its happened before) so i disconnected the main battery to reset the sub tank, connected the battery again today no sub tank light, all good. then when i ran the winch again tonight the f@$kin sub tank light stayed on again!?!?

yeah i had the revs up mate, n the battery is all good its got a indicator on it when it goes bad, & yeah its green and the volts are all good!

well ive had the battery load tested and altenator checked, all good!
i re-wired the whole thing to this diagram (a few minor changes)
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2013/06/19.jpg
and same result, it reels in and reels out but when i try to winch up a hill, it just stops and not enough power!
so im guessin its the solenoid because the winch was ok before i changed the solenoid (expcept clicking every now and again)
cheers denis

What's the winch do I you bypass the solenoid?

its a warn xd9000 mate, i dont understand the rest of your post mate!

So the solenoid is just a big relay to step up the amps to the winch motor.
Basically Newby is asking what the winch does when you Hotwire the winch straight to the battery without the solenoid?

oh yep, how do you hotwire it mate? i didnt know you could do that!
i dont know much about winchs!

The winch will run. Just dont put it under load. The solinoid just has the ability to switch high current

thanks heaps mudrunner and newby, ill try it tomorrow!

Yeah what mudrunner said. Sorry I didnt word it very well. "Hot wiring" it will show you straight away whether its the motor or the solenoid.

thats the problem, the winch reels in and out it has power but when i put it under load (winch up an easy slope) it takes up the slack then when the rope is tight it stops!?

If that is the symptom then it means the maximum current flowing in the the winch motor.
Hot wiring may not help unless you do it under load as the winch will happily run with minimal current draw and possibly not show up the fault.
If you don't have any high resistance connections at the Battery/Solenoid/Motor then it will be a faulty solenoid or internal issue in the winch IE cracked/worn brushes, commutator insulation breakdown or general grunge.
Personally I don't like the 4 point contactors and prefer the Warn 4 solenoid setup but no biggee... do you have the old solenoid pack that was working OK?
If so and you can't hot wire it under load then wire it back up and try the winch under load.
If the fault disappears then the 4 point contactor is the issue.
If it is the same then I would service the winch.
The XD9000's are very simple to pull apart and replace brushes etc

well after a long on goin drama, i finally found that the problem was the winch!
it had been siting in my bull bar for a while with little use! when i pulled it apart the bottom half of the armature was completly corroded!
i got the steel brush onto it, & cleaned it right up!
wired it all back up n it works a treat again!
thanks for your help fellas!
