Howdy guys,

I think I may have busted a CV??? Dunno how as I havnt been fourbying for several months now, went to lock the hubs this morning and the passenger side hub was extremely tight, I tapped it into the lock position with a hammer, and this loosened it up nicely, but as soon as I turned the wheel, a loud clicking noise came through, back to free wheeling, no noise, put it back into lock and no noise for about a km, and then a much quieter clicking and not as frequent?

So, How do I diagnose a busted CV? From the above description, would you think I have one? and how difficult is it to swap one out?

Cheers in advance

Hmmmmmm tricky, could be a hub not engaged properly. I assume you have manual hubs? They should not have been that tight. I would start by taking off the hub that was seized and strip it and clean it up, repack and refit then see how that goes.

Had the same problem this week with auto hubs. Driving straight noise for 200mtr then nothing. Bit later did it again. Checked wheels and bearings had a bit of play. Re-packed bearings and fitted new manual locking hubs. All good. Think it was the auto hub but not sure how to check.
As for changing cv. Took me 5 hrs to do it for my first time including changing bearings. If you do it yourself. After Knocking out the bigger bearing shell. Grind it down about 1mm diameter and use it to fit the new shell and seal. ( Putting them in the freezer also helps ) Makes life real easy.

Yeh., Manual Hubs Mudrunner.

had to drive to the shops this morning, and it made one hell of a noise, metal on metal grinding :( got home, and the wheel had a heap of camber on it??? pulled it apart and the bearing has no grease, and the hub is full of dirt caked grease. quick clean, tightened and dropped it on the ground, wheel is straight again and no grinding noises when I spun it by hand. Would have done a complete repack, but wouldnt you know it, the handbrake threw out the pot of grease that was in the garage (well I never see you use it and it looks so yucky.) So tomorrow arvo will be spent giving both the front bearings and hubs the once over.
